8. I find solace in that these are 'often misspelled words' according
to the creator of the test. I know I can't be alone. But gimme a hard word I've never seen and I can usually figure it out, as long as you use it in a sentence.

(again, nothing noted on spell check) LOL, I am obsessive now! OH, except that 'spell check' is two words. I like it better as a compound word.

12. Oh, really? Spell "chiliastic"!
I bet ya can't!

;)

By the way, I used to think spelling was a sign of intelligence until I met one of the most intelligent writers I've ever known who was an abyssmal speller. Bottom of the barrel. Couldn't spell his way out of a kindergarten. But a brilliant writer--and a great editor--nevertheless. So take heart, all ye lousy spellers.

15. c h i l i a s t i c.
relating to or believing in the millennium of peace and happiness

very nice...hadn't heard that one. Kinda hard to have a spelling challenge online... :-)

spell the word that means: "Coming before the next to the last in a series." (from dictionary.com)

That was good!

:wow:

Penultimate.

PS: "Chiliastic" was in the book I'm currently reading: Pol Pot, by Philip Stone. There've actually been a bunch of words in this book that have sent me to the dictionary, which is rare in a book these days.

I am feeling a bit like a dumb ass. I have become too reliant on spell check and my skills are weak.

-although spell check found nothing to complain about in this message-

on edit, btw, there's nothing but sarcasm in the subject line. :-) although I would like to see a hard one, IYO...and see how I do. I like a challenge.

9. Damn
I got 10 wrong, thought my spelling was a strong point. In high school we took a 100 word spelling test, I made two spelling errors.

10. Don't take it personally...
I agree with Mark Twain--good spelling ability is something you're born with, so it's not anything to be proud of, because you didn't have to work for it.

It's also a curse; bad spelling is very irritating to good spellers. Just like people with perfect pitch can have problems listening to music because they can hear that ONE string in the piano that's slightly out of tune.

PS: Never rely on spell checkers when it's something important. A spell-checker won't notice that you typed "saw" when you meant to type "was."

The best way to check anything you write is to read it aloud. Always works.

spell checkers are good for things like this, but I don't stake my life on them.

Spelling and $2.00 will get me a subway ride. I'm just a geek who went over spelling words dozens of times with my grandma. She'd be proud.

18. Wow, did I do poorly
I missed 14:

desiccate
privilege
desperate
embarrassment
battalion
consensus
inadvertent
minuscule
inoculate
existence
sacrilegious
insistent
anoint
supersede

Not that I'm surprised. I agree, these are the types of words I usually rely on spell check to catch for me. Anything that's a ent/ant ending usually trips me up, with a few exceptions that I've memorized because I use them often.
