Ken Griffey Jr. Out For Season with Ankle Injury

I really hate to pick on Junior, but he's been an absolute disaster since coming to Cincinnati.

WTF... is he made of glass or something? My grandmother is less fragile than he is.

Sad, but I'll never stop loving my Reds,
Jennifer :-(

1. Bummer.
Griffey should probably go the American League to be a DH, or just retire. He can't keep doing this, thats for sure.

2. Heres a guy who a few years ago was on his way to being...
the greatest ever. He had it all, hit for power, average, could run, and was a spectacular fielder. When he came to Cincy he got hurt every year.
I think he will be back.
Remember Mark McGuire was hurt for about 4 yrs, doing virtualy nothing, then he came back and broke records.
Jr. likes the west coast and I suspect he will end up in LA, San Diego, SF or Oakland eventually.
I havent written him off yet.
He's no Jose Canseco.

4. With all due respect...
... I could see your glee if Junior had chosen to go to the freaking Yankees or something, but he left the AL to come back to Cincinnati. He was raised here, he's a favorite son here, his home is here. He just wanted to be close to his family, and to get into a smaller market (as you know, Junior's a little press-shy).

This isn't so much karma as it is frailty.

:-(

8. ha! here's some context...
If you only knew...

Seattle was HAPPY to see him go. What a whiny, pathetic, spoiled little fucker! Cincy has found out what we already knew - he is a drag and a bore. Such greatness shouldn't be wasted on pathetic whiny losers. His father is probably ashamed. Don't think Seattleites aren't getting lots of schadenfreude out of his misfortunes, because we are. From his coveting of #30, to his incessant injury woes, we have watched with a combination of amusement and relief that he no longer disgraces us with his self-pitying presence.

I agree he is wasted potential. But he should look no further than the mirror. Ken Griffey Jr. is the Master Rationalizer of his self-inflicted wounds.

I come by my harsh views honestly.

I was there at the Kingdome, Opening Night 1989, when his first pitch off of his first at-bat yielded his first major league HR.

I was there when he and his Dad hit back-to-back homers.

It was heart-warming, All-American goodness and fun.

But he pissed tons of immense goodwill away. The "Kid" with the endearing grin and shy demeanor became the clichéd sports jock nightmare of spoiled entitlement and whiny self-justification. Nothing was his fault, and everyone was "out to get him". His failures became magnified in the cauldron of self-pity.

Weep not for Junior. He got what we wanted - a berth closer to "home" and more time with his kids. The Reds don't need him any more than the Mariners, as Mike Cameron and a 116 win season proved.

Reds fans, take heart. Your team is going nowhere, but at least it won't be Griffey's fault this time. :-)

6. I hate to see this happen
Griffey had the potential to be such a goodwill ambassador for the game. Things just haven't gone well in Cincinnati for him.

Injuries have always been a problem for Griffey. His agressive play in Center Field always ended up getting his wrist or something else hurt.

7. As an eternal Mariner, when Junior left Seattle I said
good riddance to bad rubbish. I loved that little boy
grin, the backwards hat, the sweet swing, but Junior
did us wrong when he left.

Word is from a sports guy I listen to is that Junior
was always so athletically gifted that he never did the
maintenance work it takes to prevent injury.

Those habits are coming back to bite him. (I saw the
clip of his injury and I felt bad for Reds fans. Hey
you're NL, so I can be generous.)

9. a thought I had the other day
When he was being touted for having 4 HR's in 4 games or some such, I thought to myself: "Watch him get injured in a few days...".

I swear I didn't intend for it to happen.

Your friend is right. He took his great gifts for granted, and that "Kid" of long ago Seattle is nothing more than a pouty, whiny brat.

Is it any wonder the honeymoon in his "hometown" (he was born in PA, but because Dad played for Cincy, ho hum...) never really materialized?

I don't miss him. Besides, don't you think Mike Cameron has a much nicer smile? :D Seriously, Cammy is a class act through and through. He knew he had to make us forget the "Kid", and he did so immediately, upon making that spectacular catch during his Mariner debut.

10. Junior is indeed a Cincy Kid
Edited on Fri Jul-18-03 03:26 AM by VolcanoJen
Graduate of Moeller High School, in fact. I live so close to Moeller that every Friday night in autumn, I can hear the crowds at the football games. If it's all the same to you, those of us who lived in this city and grew up watching Moeller games during those lazy mid-80's summers as his talent emerged will continue to consider Junior to be from the 'Nati.

Maybe one day when Seattle manages to win a World Series (like that'll happen), I'll have a little more respect for their team and their bitter, bitter fans. How disappointed you guys must be.

I do dig the moose though. And at least you're not a Yankees fan. Now, for my next topic, when exactly will AL pitchers learn how to hit?

Go Oakland,
Jennifer ;-)

ON EDIT: Funny how I came here to bitch about Junior, only to wind up defending him. I guess once someone picks on my Beloved Reds, all caution is thrown to the wind. Well.... that's baseball-luv for ya.

God, how I love baseball smack-talk

15. As I Mariner Fan, I have absolutely nothing to be bitter
about. Mike Cameron did indeed make me forget
Junior with his spectacular fielding skills, his
infectious personality. (His hitting still leaves
some room for doubt, however.)

I wouldn't count the M's out of the World Series
just yet. Bob Melvin is no Lou Pineilla, and in the
last few years it was always that Joe Torre had Piniella's
number. I heard today that the Yankees have too many
holes to make it too far.

I wasn't slamming Junior, was merely stating facts.
You weren't here, you don't know how badly Junior
handled the whole situation. His PR people flunked
big time--compare stories about how Alex did it and
you'll see what I'm talking about.

I did say I feel badly for him, and for Cincy fans.
Didn't I?

16. we're not bitter at all
I don't think you read my post - we are HAPPY he is gone. We love that the conservative repuke city of Cincinnati - with their team who not too long ago was owned by the disgusting filthy racist repuke nazi Marge Schott - has him. Griffey was a whiny malcontent crybaby with self-pity to spare. His tears could cause the Ohio River to flood if you're not careful. We read his press up here with morbid glee. We know that even a lot of Cincy natives lost their affection for him. They put too many hopes and dreams on him continuing to play as before, but he is a bundle of mishaps and injuries. Before I run out of adjectives, I'll just say...

The Mariners will have several World Series wins under their belts before Griffey ever plays a full season again. His career has run its course.

The Reds won't go anywhere when the Cubs put them away for good.

18. I still have a sneaking fondness for the Kid
the Kid that he was - the one that they could make that corny meteor-ad about (remember that one? the meteor was gonna hit the earth, and they put Junior on the Space Needle and he whacked it back into space? that was so dumb that you had to love it.) He still has the prettiest swing I've ever seen, and was one of the most gifted athletes in all creation. The problem is that he got lazy; that started some years back, when he came back to spring training downright chubby. He doesn't like to work out. Well, HEL-lo, you play at that level and you don't work out, you WILL get hurt. The trainers aren't allowed to be hard on him, because he's Mr. Big Shot now.

I loved him when he was just Junior, before he became Baseball, Inc. I try not to feel too much schadenfreude about it, because he didn't deliberately screw us as bad as Pay-Rod did.

Besides, dude, aren't you supposed to be a Diamondbacks fan now? You get to go see the Big Unit again, you lucky dawg!

17. say what??
He is almost as despised as Alex Rodriguez. Alex is a greedhead and a phony, and Griffey was as bad: a millionaire crybaby moaning about being "misunderstood" and "unhappy"... :nopity: You know how many kids dream of being big leaguers, and would be ECSTATIC to have his gifts, and his chances?? What a helluva way to appreciate it.

I wish the Reds would import more injury-prone whiners.

14. Bet Griffey wishes he had a time machine right about now....
He had a couple injuries in Seattle too, but he always came back, seemingly stronger afterwards. The guy's been falling apart ever since he left town. And I just can't feel all that sorry for him :evilfrown:
