..some of the best crafted pop songs ever.

The songs themselves - beyond the 4/6th lip synching.

9. It was a genre of music that first appeared in the mid-60s.
Sort of a backlash to the progressive rock of the era, it was extremely melodic, bright, and happy, with lyrics that usually dealt with adolescent love. In many cases, songs were recorded by the same studio musicians in various combinations under different names (see Buddah Records for an example). Lots of campy classics emerged from this genre.

10. I remember them all (which is unfortunate, in some cases).
I might even have a couple of them on 45s. (Oh, I'm so embarrassed!)

Edited on Wed Oct-15-03 03:23 PM by mac56
Bubblegum "classics" recorded by alt-rock and power pop artists and bands. Really quite good. I recommend "1-2-3 Red Light" by Joyride and "Time To Change" (from the Brady Kids) by Michael Carpenter.

14. Top of the World/Carpenters
The Carpenters songs were played on the radio all the time on the cheesy station my parents listened to whenever we went for our Sunday drives, or travelled in the car. I have the "If I Were a Carpenter" CD, which I love.

20. Some of those are a little heavy/garagy-ey for Bubblegum.
Hanky Panky, especially, is a great garage tune. Up there with Paul Revere and the Raiders' 'Just Like Me.'

21. Does Brian Hyland's "Sealed With a Kiss" count?
I always loved that song. In fact, I thought it would be best done as an Ennio Morricone-esque guitar instrumental.

Didn't Hyland record "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka-dot Bikini?" If that ain't bubblegum, I don't know what is.
