1. I don't travel very much at all, but when I have
I've used these ones:
Expedia
Travelocity
Priceline

And have these ones bookmarked:
Cheapseats.com
Cheaptickets.com

2. Options
I've used Travelocity, haven't used Orbitz (and neither particularly often). Be careful. Rates might or might not be better than what you can get by going directly to the airlines' sites, and these are very user-friendly. I've booked on Air Canada via their website and got a pretty good fare (lousy service in the air, though).

I book just about all my travel on Southwest directly on their website - again, easy to use.

Don't book until you are sure you have what you want and absolutely know what the restrictions are as well as the additional costs for changes, etc.

3. Hrm...
www.travelocity.com
www.expedia.com
www.hotwire.com
www.iflyswa.com (depends on where you are)
www.cheaptickets.com

It depends on what you want. Some will let you search for best fares with flexible dates, hotwire often has good rates but you can't pick who you're flying with, etc.

What are you trying to book tix for?
