He's probably showing the relationship between the limits of the the two dimensional surface of the canvas in relationship of the object contained with-in (notice how the circle is off to the side and up toward the corner), thus displaying that the two dimension surface is just that, a two dimensional surface...

But you probably didn't want to hear that...
