Need help with planning a Mexican vacation to Puerto Vallarta area

Has anyone ever vacationed in this area, and if so, can you recommend some decent hotels right on the beach? My wife and I are planning to go in mid-April because our son works in that area, so we're going to splurge and visit him and take in some R and R. So far we've been using the selloffvacations.com site, but there are so many choices of hotels in the same price range that we don't know where to start. Any recommendations of a decent hotel or any other ideas of neat stuff about that area? Thanks.
