How do you find out someone's IP?
On that impeach judge Greer petition there's a guy threatening to find the IP of everyone disrupting on there.

How does one do that, anyway?

5. You log into a server, and exchange packets with it...
...and the server logs the IP address it connects with to send you packets in return. It's probably a trivial matter for the server admin to find your IP, and block posts from it.

That's about it, unless s/he decides to report you to Homeland Security just to mess with you.

7. Does it matter whether you have a dynamic or static IP?

9. If your IP is dynamic...
...you're unlikely to post from that same IP again for a while after you disconnect. A static IP, presumably, doesn't change often, and is therefore easier for an admin to block.

An admin could also block posts from an entire range of IPs, in which case another dynamic assignment wouldn't get you through.

6. That's bullshit, I did a petition on Petition Online as well.
Unless he is the actual webmaster of Petition Online I'm sure he can't do this. I was the owner of the petition and they were not all that responsive even to MY requests-- I'm sure they would not respond at all to one of the signatories' threats -- although they did return my emails in a couple of DAYS, that's the most they did when my petition got freeped.

8. That type of thing is usually an idle threat. Not much he can do with it,
anyway.

11. Depending on the board, sometimes it's as easy as
clicking View then Source, you can scan thru the source code for the page and get the ISP's. I'm sure it doesn't work with all Boards tho.
