A personal pet peeve: The difference between yea and yeah
For some reason it really kills me how otherwise super-intelligent people interchange the spellings of yea and yeah as if they don't care.

yea rhymes with day as in yippee!
yeah rhymes with the a sound in flat as in yeah, man... that rocks...

GET IT RIGHT! Man it bugs me.

11. Sorry.
Couldn't resist.

I can't really call it a pet peeve, but it makes me laugh when people use expressions that are totally wrong but sound like the correct version.

For example,

"I'd just assume get take-out as go out to dinner." (instead of as soon).

Or, the other day, a woman sent me an e-mail that said,

"Now, keep im mine that I have over 15 years of experience..." (instead of keep in mind).

13. It's a pet peeve of mine, too, but...
I don't think yea is the correct word for yippee. Yea is old English for yes. Yay is the correct spelling for the yippee type exclamation. I could be wrong, though.

15. I think he means that yippee is the definition for yea.
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 03:35 AM by pamela
I still think that yea (rhymes with day) is Old English for yes; Yeah (rhymes with first syllable of weather) means yes, yup or uh-huh and yay (also rhymes with day) means yippee or hurray. As in "Yea verily, I say unto you that, yeah, Bush is a pig but someday he'll be gone and we can all say Yay!"

18. and then there's the french forte verses the italian forte
one meaning his/her specialty and the other to do with music

one pronounced for-tay and the other pronounced fort...

and people always screw them around and say "fishing is his for-TAY" when they mean the french FORT...and I wrinkle my nose when they do

and yeah, I know it's become acceptable to pronounce it as "for-tay"...but it's still wrong. :)

but that's just me :)
