1. tell him to stop drinking milk
my dad stopped drinking milk and stopped snoring.

I've got insomnia, like usual

2. did he drink it every day?
he only has it maybe once a week or so...I'll try anything at this point. I don't know if he will, because, you know, HE'S not losing any sleep over it!

I have insomnia bouts too, sorry about yours. I don't let myself claim insomnia till it hits 3am. I hope I don't tonight.

3. yeah, he did drink it every day..
dairy does tend to get people congested.. that's why opera singers avoid it. However, if he only drinks it once a week - that's probably not the cause.

Have you tried tickling his nose with a feather?

4. I've tried very similar things, just not with a feather...
I've gone so far as to pinching his nose shut so he'll open his mouth! He gets mad when I do that.

it's weird, he snores thru his nose, not his mouth. I swear he just closes up his throat a bit to make me mad. I've tried the nasal strips, they don't work for more than a few minutes.

I get to the point where I just literally wake him up and tell him to stop snoring. He falls back asleep in about five milliseconds and is snoring again in two minutes. It takes me about fifteen to thirty minutes to fall asleep. I've tried going to bed before him, but I wake up when he gets into bed, he's asleep instantly and snoring, I am up for hours dealing with it.

It's infuriating since it's a relatively new phenomenon. we've been together for almost 11 years, this is just the last year that it's been really really unbearable.

I'm actually seeing sleep specialists, not ENTs

5. I finally broke down and bought ear plugs
Smartest thing I've ever done, especially considering how homicidal I was beginning to feel. I only regret that it took me 12 years to figure out that ear plugs might be worth a try.

9. I've tried them, but they are very uncomfortable, and
I use a 'sleep inducing' CD for my insomnia. Then there is the possible phone call, fire alarm, etc... makes me nervous. DH sleeps like the dead. have you had any probs with waking?

30. I had to try a couple of different brands...
...at first, so comfort was an issue with me, too. The ones I have now allow high pithed frequencies, so the smoke alarm is definately audible. No problems waking up, at all. Besides, I've had them fall out while I was sleeping, which is no problem. Once I'm alseep - I'm fine. But trying to GET to sleep with a sawmill 2 feet away just doesn't happen. And I just lay there getting more and more aggravated - and more and more awake.

7. Do what I'm doing - have his sleeping habits checked out
If his snoring is that loud, it could be the sign of trouble. Especially if his snoring runs like an engine then suddenly stops for a few seconds then followed by gasps for air.

Not sure what your insurance information is, but I know mine is covering the treatment, which is basically a medical checkup, a night of sleeping at their facilities and then treatment afterwards (which could include either surgery or a special mask worn that will help keep the flow of oxygen going while you sleep).

What I described is Sleep Apnea. It's not something you want to mess around with!

10. My step dad has been thru the testing you mention,
I don't think that's what dh has, and I doubt he would do the overnight testing. He's obstinate as hell. I appreciate the warning, I will try to convince him. His is very consistant and sounds like it's in the top of his throat all the time. (I finally got some sleep, btw. He stopped about 215am, at least long enough for me to fall asleep) :-)

29. yes i know, just a little
they turn him from chainsaw to medium size table saw. Many nights he has to sleep in the guest room because he's so friggin loud. He's been through all the testing too and it showed nothing. His snoring i think comes from being over tired and needing to lose about 25lbs.

33. I guess I should count myself lucky, he's usually a med. size table saw,
so it could be worse. I think his comes from tension, he's never completely relaxed. Mine won't move, so I have to be the one who goes to the spare room. :-( poor me. and I hate not having a body next to me in bed, but not a noisy one please!

13. obstinate schmobstinate--get him in for a study
My brother-in-law suffered congestive heart failure and part of the problem was that he wasn't getting enough air when he slept.

Snoring is almost always an airway obstruction.

28. that happened to my father too
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 01:43 PM by Zuni
he had sleep apnea, and later suffered congestive heart failure. His sleep apnea was treated, but it was too late and he died of a heart attack a few years later.

14. I am not awake because your husband snores.
Mine does too, though. Loudly.

Most of his has to do with extra weight. If he'd lose some weight - and he could stand to lose quite a bit - his snoring problem would abate. I know this because he lost 50 pounds in 1999 and was pretty trim, and it virtually eliminated the snoring issue.

22. :-) I don't think mine could stand to lose any, he'd blow away if he did!
He's pretty thin...

Snoring sucks. apparently it can be life threatening for the person snoring, and cause murderous rage in those that have to sleep near them!

23. I wish he could sleep on a mattress made like the hot dog rollers at 7/11
then I wouldn't have to do anything! That works for about two mins, then he gets going again, position doesn't seem to matter.

I am just going to have to get his dr. involved. :-)

25. Wouldn't that be cool? MrG has this same problem and went and had
the study done. On the second night, the mask kept falling off and blowing air all over his face, so he opted out of the huge amount of money they cost. They are definitely not for overactive sleepers. :hi: Good luck!

26. googled it, thanks.
I don't see him agreeing to use it unless forced to by his dr. and even then...probably not. I can barely get him to use a seatbelt because it's 'uncomfortable'. WTF?
