okay, got a job offer. But it's at a red company... need advice.

so, I've got a really good job offer but it's at a red company. There are not that many choices left in the area that has good pay and benefits. I work at a small business now, with my husband and I really enjoy it and we get to see eachother all the time, but I'm only making 23k a year, and he makes 35k a year and we have no health insurance. If I take this job I won't be making that much more money, but it will be more and I get health insurance. We also won't see eachother that much. So.... What y'all think?

While greed is a factor for voting *, that's usually why the execs vote for *. Most of us are simply duped.

I know co-workers who are repubs who, once I got to know them, are all in all damn good people.

There's good and bad in everything but, once again, the tantamount issue is survival. I definitely say take the job and try to go with the good.

I was making very good money at my last job, but I was miserable. The place was ran by control freaks who didn't have a clue and most of my peers were back stabbers. They preached safety on the job as long as it didn't cost the company money. etc etc etc..

I now work for a different place and making about half the amount I was making, but I'm very happy.

There are a lot more red companies out there than blue companies. Personally, I refuse to work for military contractors, companies involved in the firearms or tobacco industries, or companies whose products or practices I consider unethical. But it would be difficult to find work if I took all red companies out of consideration.

Working for a red company may require that you will eventually need health insurance.

Which is something I need, I have some medical problems now, and everything is payed out of pocket. I'm still trying to pay off a hospital bill from 2003. I think I'm more afraid of the change. My husband and I love working together, we have for 10 years now. Everything going on in our life says we need to make a change, but....

Doesn't Maine have an alliance that supplies health insurance for the community? When I lived in Portland I interviewed with an organization that was petitioning hard for that and I recently heard they won it. I could find out if you want.

there is the dirigo health plan, but I do believe there are still the income guide lines, some kind of co-pay. My boss looked into it and she couldn't do it. But then again what boss actually *wants* to pay for health insurance for their employees, so she was probably BS'ing me. I'm gonna look into dirigo again. But yeah, it would be great if you could find something out.

Let a repug be the one without health insurance, as it should be.

Republican (Repub not Repug -- their behavior has always been scrupulously nonpartisan), but which is big enough to have a full range of political/moral beliefs represented among its employees (not to mention about every nationality under the sun). While it's true that my loathing of Schimpanski and his ilk wouldn't go down well in the boardroom, I'm never invited there to talk about anything but business, so I've never had a problem and have been happy in my work.

Sure, I wish they wouldn't use thier wealth to support people whose politics I despise, but it is their money after all.

Is this company you're considering joining anything like what I've described? If so, you should do fine.

You can never have too many hole-punches, and you can sell them on eBay if you get laid off.

Unless the entire staff that you'll be dealing with are rabid neo-cons and unless the company itself does something you find morally repugnant, I would take it. You need the health insurance - that's crucial. Why not allow the Repugs to provide it for you? Kind of poetic justice, in a way.

I just never got involved in the political discussions. There was no point. They weren't my friends, and I didn't socialize with them outside of the office, so staying silent and letting things slide with them got me through the day. Plus, I invested in a really great pair of headphones and bought me a little cd player (though now it might be an iPod - I'm not up on all the cool new gadgets). And I was on AIM all day with pals as I was working. Worked like a charm. :)

I have found that the job is what counts, the co workers on a daily basis are what counts

I have never worked for a company that tried to impact my political views in any significant way.

You will run into folks like yourself in any large entity and you will run into neocon republicans in any large entity.

Is the work something you would really like and enjoy? Do you feel some sort of rapport with the immediate person who hired you? The national political views of upper upper management don't have too much impact on the local team you are in. Benefits are a big plus!!!!!!!

Sometimes youjust have to look at the long haul.

The flip side of that way of thinking is that if you refuse the job, some asshole Bush voter might be getting it instead. So by taking it you're perhaps supporting red, but by refusing it you could be too.

The main question is health insurance vs. time with the husband. Without knowing you well and the details of your life, I'm not really in a place to give advice on that.

And if you find out you're not happy, you can always look for another job. But you will have steady income and benefits.
