Anyone else glad Girl Scout cookie season is over?

As an elementary school teacher, I am "obligated" to buy from many students at school, as well as the neighborhood kids. Since the hubby LOVES them (and never gains an ounce, damn him!), he buys more from the people selling in front of the grocery store.

So....after several long weeks, I think we've come to the end of our mountainous supply. I certainly did my part with the peanut butter sandwich cookies...but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

I have enough thin mints and those coconut chocolate ones in my pantry to last a lifetime.

Thank god this is the last neice to go through girl scouts. I'm giving a number of boxes away for easter.

but I don't think even that would work. When I first met him, he was a hard partyer who could down a six pack of beer or more, and eat three HUGE meals a day, never exercise, and STILL remain skinny. That was twenty years ago. Today he doesn't drink, but the rest of the picture is the same. He eats like a horse, and is still six foot one and one hundred seventy five pounds. I try not to be jealous.

this year they got me for probably 6 boxes. Outside the grocery store, girl scouts were there. Outside of Kmart, girl scouts were there too. If I didn't know better I would have thought they were following me.
Damn I love those cookies, so happy they are gone.

And did the obligatory cookie selling thing (back in the day when we actually went door to door - none of this setting up outside the grocery store and buttonholing customers on the way out). I must have raised 6 million dollars for the Scouts and never saw any return - never went to camp, never had anything particularly special going on in our troop. We bought our own uniforms and financed our own outings. Where does that money go anyway?

I paid for my own camp and uniforms too. They also use volunteers for leaders.:shrug:

Like when they used to force us to sell candies, wrapping paper, notecards and prayer candles in grade school.

I'm pretty sure we didn't have any sports teams or expensive field trips to cover the costs for, so why do kids have to hawk that crap?

paying for all the outings/activities that the troop did together when I was in brownies. I remember we went camping for a weekend once. I imagine some of the cookie money went toward paying for that. We also did other things, I just can't remember what they are. We didn't have pay for our sashes either. Maybe you had a crooked troop leader. It seems kind of weird that you had to pay for everything, unless the troop activities were expensive.

Councils set their own prices for cookies. We charge $3.00 for ours.

$1.38 -- program events and resources, volunteer recruitment and training, financial aid (camp and other programs), resident camp, and maintenance and operation of program/camp facilities.

$1.01 -- Cost of cookies and sale expenses

$0.50 -- Troop proceeds

$0.12 -- awards and troop bonuses

$0.01 -- individual service units (clusters of troops within the council)

This particular council does have quality facilities, especially the resident camps, which do take a great deal of maintenance. Troops can spend their money as they wish. In previous years, the troop my daughter was with paid for everything -- registration, sashes, books -- with cookie money. Now, the troop is saving for a trip (destination undecided) sometime within the next couple of years.

But I'll be honest with you, speaking as a "cookie mom." Cookie season is a tremendous pain the ass, and I'm glad it wraps up next week. Then I can retire from the position and let someone else have the fun.

Bet it goes up 3/4 of a point every spring...

My daughter, in 3rd grade has had her last cookie selling adventure! No more. I'm done and she said that she doesn't want to do this anymore. We have another girl scout on our street and she took the majority of the sales because she was out first. I refuse to go door to door to houses we don't know. Thus, low cookie sales for her. Oh well. The cookies have been passed out and money collected.

...I wish the Thin Mints were available year-round!

(Of course, my youngest daughter is still to young to be a Scout herself. If/when she has to do the sales, with us in tow, I might have a quite different opinion...)

By the box, or by the Case! Another poster around here somewhere mentioned buying the case and freezing them, eating one box a month.

I'm supposed to stay away from sugar per doctor's orders. I'm not diabetic, so the consequences of eating sugar aren't as immediately felt, but still. The local Girl Scouts insist on parking themselves in front of my grocery store. I have to eat, so I can't avoid them, and before I know it I become the proud owner of three boxes of thin mints. Then my husband buys some from a co-worker. It's an evil, multifaceted plot.

I know that I would have fallen prey to the Thin Mints if I had them in the house. There's always next year - or so I tell myself. Why can't I do that with everything else, dammit!

They are tempting, but I really don't need them.
