Thousands of western sandpipers flash white wings in the sun as they take off and land on the southern waters of San Francisco Bay.

Some wintered here, and some are stopping on the Pacific Flyway before flying thousands of miles to nest in the Canadian and Alaskan Arctic.

Wildlife experts are seeing these small but spunky migratory shorebirds, in record numbers at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, as an early bonus of one of the nation's most ambitious efforts to recover tidal marshland once lost to development.
