3. I'm used to php/mySql
but this customer insists on using access/ISS, etc. Fine, I'm trying to make a simple repeating table from a standard recordset in Dreamweaver 2004 MX, but I can only get one page view with data per restart - else it's

Error Type:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
Could not use '(unknown)'; file already in use.
/commerce/federal.asp, line 8

I've given IUSR_Mycomputername full permissions, specifically set the site to be public with execute, and it's still unresponsive.

4. Yikes.
I've found Access to be alright for letting people create ad hoc reports from imported datasets from a PostgreSQL database, but there are a lot of things that Access won't let them do, like create joins on OLE fields.

This is probably another example of this error. Good luck on trying to locate any helpful information regarding the error number; I've never had much success.

Sorry I can't help you more.

6. We lost two years of accounting data...
that even Microsoft and a recovery firm couldn't get back. Also, none of our daily backups were working either. Access can't recover its own files unless you shutdown the program properly before doing the backup, which we weren't. The problems caused by Access screwing-up like this eventually put the company out of business. The sad part is we were using PostgreSQL until a repuke-thug Ivy-league school graduate that we brought-on as the CFO demanded we use a Microsoft product.

7. Access is just Excel with joins, and poorly implemented joins at that
and the people that think otherwise are in for a nasty shock someday.

9. It sound like your database is opened for exclusive use,
What are you using to connect to access? did you set up a DSN?
If you use a dsn, go into the editor and change the db access to not be exclusive.
if you have a connection string, look for 'Mode=Share Deny Read|Share Deny Write;' if you see that, you would want to just remove it.
You can also try opening your database and on the advanced tab of the Tools Options dialog, change the default open mode to shared.
I know nothing about the tool you're using, but you may need to explicitly close your recordsets when you're done with them, since an open recordset may be locking your table. Access is actually a good database tool for folks who don't know what they're doing and want the tool to do stuff for them. It is a bad choice for a database backend.
I don't know if there is any such thing, but if you can get a PSP Oledb or ODBC driver from somewhere, you may be able to link to a real database from access, which is usually what people want when they want the db to be in access.

Good luck.

13. I agree
Unfortunately I have to use it all the time. If I ever want to do anything even mildly complicated I write a little perl program. After using it for years I still can do almost nothing through the interface. That surprises and angers a lot of people I work with when they come asking me questions. I can do a LOT with Access (and any database) but I usually have to do it through perl.

Access blows, worse than Paradox or FoxPro.

I code everything in Delphi...

17. Update:
I ranted and raved at my digital pimp about how ridiculous it was to be scripting for *cough* Access *cough* and he agreed, and we're going to deliver the site as a php/mySQL site and they'll either have to find a new host or pay an extra $10 per month to have those options available. Of course, that means they already have a shitty host, and there's tons out there that would do the same thing for free, but they can't have everything

Ahhh, blessed PHP, it makes so much sense, and it works on my little old laptop running Apache a bazillion times faster than this IIS6/Access shit ever did

18. You're a digital ho!
That explains a lot.

I completely understand the idea of Access being Excel with joins (whatever those are). That's pretty much all I understood about this thread.

I think I'm so smart until I hear people say things like PHP and mySQL. I think I will now eat some honey ham. :silly:
