Poll question: Texas vs. Florida-Where would you live if you had to choose between the 2
Edited on Sat Mar-26-05 11:17 PM by RagingInMiami
Yes, we are the states that everybody loves to hate, but we are also two of the most populated states in the country -- so some people don't mind living here.
Both states have panhandles. Both states are football-obsessed. And both states have the death penalty and are not afraid to use it.
Keep in mind that although both states are red, they both have liberal enclaves.
Austin in Texas and the four southern counties in Florida.

...pointed out that a lot of parts of Florida are quite Liberal.
Those Freaks down the street from me (Terri S.) are not representative of Florida.

2. Texas
Nothing against Florida but the overdevelopment gives me hives. Still lots of open space in Texas.

13. I agree with FL overdevelopment. Lived in both places.
When I lived in Florida in the 1970's and 1980's, it was still a place where you could find uncrowded beaches, nature not far from just about everywhere, and a number of areas that were still relatively unspoiled pieces of heaven (keys, SW Florida, most of the Atlantic Coast from St. Augustine down to about Jupiter or so).

I went there last year, seeing just about the whole state (Pen to Jax to KW to Marco I/Naples, TSP, Tal and back to Pen). It's crowded. More crowded than I've ever sensed, like it just hit a critical mass. It probably did, with most of the coastal areas finally filling in. The area from Port St. Joe to Panama City still seemed like old times, but the idea of laid-back coastal living in Florida is gone forever. I've also noticed a real decline in conservation commitment, which is a new development (pardon the pun).

If I decide to leave San Antonio, I'd choose Beaumont over the coastal Florida towns at this point if I wanted to live near the coast. I'm not particularly loyal to either Texas or to the South (notice the DU name of this Native New-Yorker formerly known as rsammel), but if I wanted nice weather, and easy access to the coast and to the woods, I'd go with Beaumont, or even Houston over and above Tampa or Miami.

I would have never imagined saying that 20 years ago, when I was considering going back to Florida for college, where I could have pulled off in-state tuition at FSU.

6. I tried Florida about six years ago.
After seven years in Seattle, I reckond I deserved some sun. After I arrived, the job market collapsed. Everyone seemed whacko. So I cut my losses and headed north. Doing better for now.

7. FL w/out a doubt. Need 3rd choice: Persistent Vegitative State
For those who just can't stand either state. Personally, I'd take Miami, the Grove or Coral Gables in particular. Also, St. Petersberg for the coastal area, the Dali Museum, and that retro, funky down town. Hey, I'm in a Red State too but Northern Virginia is like Ft. Lauderdale. We're on the 'down low' here. We had one of these cases under the last Republican Governor (Gilmore aka Enron). It was quickly taken care of as we are, ultimatly, the state of Jefferson and Mason, the original seculars.

I've already spent my whole life here so far. I'd like to get out eventually, but if I do I'd pick a state with a whole different climate (on several levels). If I had to choose between the two, I'd just stay in Texas.

27. Florida isn't as bad as people think
South Florida (Palm Beach, Dade, and Broward counties) is largely liberal.

In fact, Florida can be broken up into two states really. Anywhere south of Daytona Beach tends to be a blue state. Anywhere north of there (including Jacksonville and Tallahassee) is a red state all the way.

Depends on where in Florida you live. I don't know if you can say the same for Texas. So I would choose Florida over Texas although I'm biased since I live there now.

Despite our problems in 2000, I don't mind living in Palm Beach County. In a few months I plan to move to the Orlando area, which seems fine as well. I wouldn't want to live in Miami or parts of North Florida.

although Austin was a pretty nice city - but I would only consider living there if somehow the city was walled off from the rest of texas and Austin was annexed into Pennsylvania. Kinda like Berlin when there was a separate East and West Germany

But that's just me

48. Florida, definitely
I often consider the notion that Texas is the only state in the Union that was once its own country, the Lone Star Republic. When I ponder this, I inevitably ask, "Why, oh why, did we not let them remain so?"

Think about it! That lack of electoral votes means complete Democratic domination. And all the antiimmigration folks would be happy to have the buffer zone.

Yes, yes. Clearly, we need to give Texas its independence once again.
