5. actually, I've heard birds...
at night. Another possibility is frogs or crickets, depending on where you are and how warm it is.

16. Your dilema reminds me of an apt. complex where I used to live
that had a vacant lot next to it, and every fricking night all these frogs would be making funny noises at night. I was told it was mating season.

2. This is the time of year for a major migration
They are active right now, searching for food. Many feed and take flight during the night.

7. Naw. They are ravenous.
They have an extremely high metabolism and need to eat ALOT, esp. when they fly alot. It'll pass.

17. Toast them some bread.
I heard you could give them some ground beef too. They also like peanut butter, bacon grease, and other things that make suet. And fruit. Only thing is the suet will decay and smell funky in a day or two, so you'd have to clean up what they don't eat. I've been hearing birds at night lately too. I'm in NC.

BTW, maybe now isn't a bad time to ask. Does anyone know the mating habits and best time to try to record the call of a barred owl? I love that maniacal laughter thing they do and would like to showcase them in my next recording.

19. They were probably just coming through.
You MIGHT could get by with the toast if you crumble it up small enough. Sorry to hear you can give them homemade suet. They love that more than the store bought kind. I have a recipe if you ever decide to move to a place where you can take up bird feeding and watching as a hobby or something. They all seem to love it too.

9. Only normal in heavily populated areas
these days. Cities are so well lit that many species of bird can see well enough at night to get around. in some cities crows are congregating for nighttime "mixers" in downtown areas (crows are very social birds) mockingbirds have also been taking advantage of the artificial days we give them.

15. Sometimes, something disturbs them.
Could be a cat. Or a person went near them. It happens here occasionally, but it's very rare. I was very surprised the first time I heard them.
