Poll question: Most Over-rated "Great" Rock Group
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 08:16 AM by WoodrowFan
ok, we've rehashed every 80s act this side of "Flock of Seagulls" What supposedly "great" rock act do YOU hate? When their songs come onto the radio you hit the next station dial so fast your SO thinks that Rush just came on the air? What group did that dips**t roommate of yours in college keep playing over and over and over until you wanted to :puke: now's the time for revenge!!

BTW, for fans of these groups, I like at least one of them..

40. Problem with GNR
is they are seriously in danger of being a one-hit wonder. They haven't don't anything decent since AfD. It's a shame, b/c Axel really can sing, I enjoy listening to him.

35. Yes, some people do.
I look at a song like Estranged, or Coma, or Locomotive, and I see alot of emotion in those lyrics. I look at some of the new (as of yet, unreleased) material.. songs like Madagascar, The Blues, or even Chinese Democracy - and I see, again, powerful lyrics and a powerful message. To me, Axl is a great lyricist. The problem is, his voice - people either love it or hate it. I've always been a fan of his voice. But I also like Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette, & Tom Petty. So I enjoy that 'style' of voice, for lack of a better description.

If you're going to judge GNR - please don't judge them by their few singles that have been exposed to the masses. Try to get a bit deeper than the few 'single' tracks and you might see what people like me find so intriguing about them.

32. Sorry, Axl doesn't belong on this list.
GNR was a once in a lifetime type of thing. Axl's a love em or hate em kinda guy, but I don't think anyone would argue that they're 'overrated'. For GNR, when Appetite for Destruction came out, timing was everything.

41. Like you said, Like em or hate em
I never got them (and yes I've listened to more than just the singles). They were before my time musically but Axl as a person and singer has always rubbed me the wrong way.

I think the fawning over them (especially the scene at the 2002 VMA) is excessive, but I do understand why some like their music. Just ain't for me

That's what I thought for about 20 years. Then one day, I heard (and actually listened to) "Kashmir" and changed my mind. They're not my favorite, but I definitely underrated them.

I had a helluva time deciding who to vote for in this poll. I voted for Elvis Costello. I never got him, never will.

I won't try to sway you, just quietly accept my punishment for my dissent. I've just never recognized the briliance of their music. I will say however, I think they are much better than many of the other bands on this list (Kiss is horrible), but I find them to be the most overrated on here.

John Bonham man, he really sucked
Those greedy fuckers,
Those phony shits,
They made their money,
Off of idiots!!!

I HATE LED ZEPPELIN!!! (x4)

12 dollar concerts,
Were all the rage,
They bought cocaine,
For Jimmy Page,
Stairway to Heaven,
Makes me see red,
Bonzo's buried,
Only 3 more left!!!!

I HATE LED ZEPPELIN!!! (xbunches)

****

Now while i don't think people that like led zeppelin are idiots, i just hate their music and thought that this song was a bit funny.

15. I voted for YES
The egos on those guys were so huge, they couldn't even stand to be on the stage with each other for 30 minutes! "I've Seen All Good People"? Get that song stuck in your head and you'll wish for death!

All of the others on the poll were worth voting for, but only after a certain date, for example:

Elvis-after 1968

U2-between 1990 and 1994 (my favorite quote about U2-"They wouldn't be so good if they weren't so full of shit")

Kiss-after Peter & Ace left

The Who-after Keith Moon died

Oh yeah, you forgot Aerosmith, who became irrelevant after Permanent Vacation.

74. No shit.
When I was in HS, YES fans were more likely to wear powder blue than black. So now the goth crowd has adopted them? WTF? Somebody tell Jon Anderson to quit wearing white. Every time I saw them he always wore white. And he was anything but a snob. He was overly happy and probably one of THE most friendly lead singers I have ever encountered. It was like he wanted to hug the whole crowd. It was almost nauseating.

then they kept making albums after the 70's ended and I could have cared less about their music.

Sometimes I'm glad that LZ folded after John Bonham's death. I'd hate to think of what would have happened to LZ if they kept putting out mediocre crap like the Stones have been doing for the past 2 decades!!!!

The Doors would be at the top of ANY boring-ass "rock" band list that I'd write. If Jim Morrison had looked like Oscar Homulka, nobody would've ever heard of them. But I've been to eight Grateful Dead shows, so what do I know?
John
Noting that, for some inexplicable reason, "Yes" just might be Andy the Right Wing Republican's favorite group. He insists that I include something from them on the FUNDAY playlist every year. We aim to please, so I do.
It is now 246 days, 22 hours and 56 minutes to FUNDAY X. Hope to see you all there.

Sorry deadheads, but they always sounded like a bunch of dudes playing guitars in the back yard. Never quite understood the whole "experience" either. 52. Elvis
Bill Haley did everything Elvis get credit for. Unfortunately Bill was a pudgy balding 30-ish guy, "the only women who swooned over him were his 3 wives".

Presented a sanitized white bread version of rock and roll, to keep kids away from Black R&B.

Musical godfather of "Vanilla Ice"

71. Bill Haley's soul was closer to Pat Boone's than Elvis'
He was a pioneer, of a sort, but his product was that sanitized whitebread stuff you disdain. Elvis was something else all together, and a product of a totally different environment, the poor south - that also makes a difference.

Listen to the Sun records. Elvis was no more Vanilla Ice than James Brown was.

55. I'd say the Kinks are the most Underrated group of all-time.
Pure genius.

P.S. I voted for The Dead. godawful endless meandering pseudo-country-jazz. It's like nails on a chalkboard for me.

59. Its embarassing to see KISS in this group of greats
So, can't vote for them. The Who? pretty easy choice, what with them having their picture next to RESTING ON THEIR LUARELS in the book of Rock Clichés. Christ, how many times have they repackaged the same tired shit?

Never liked U2 and agreed with the early poster who said they could be decent if they weren't so full of themselves (or was it shit). Saw the Red Rocks video with Bono marching to Bloody Sunday and the irony of it was lost on my simple little mind, I just saw a cheeseball performer who had jumped the shark.

Led Zep? They don't hold a spot in my record collection - except Song Remains the Same since it was SO over the top - but they did stuff others would've never dreamed of.

So, that leaves me at Yes. I can't even stand the cheesy LP covers.

And I am delighted that no one has voted for the Kinks. They are so much more than Lola and are actually an under-rated great rock band while everyone else on this list has gotten way more adulation than they deserve.

end of rant

73. here is some irony
The guitar you hear on the Kink's breakthrough hit "You Really Got Me" was played by none other than a young session player named Jimmy Page. Page played on lots of those early Kinks hits, even the tambourine.

No Page = No Kinks success, no long-term career. :-)

77. Seneca, correct me if I'm wrong

but I believe that's a myth - while Page indeed was a coveted session player at that time I am fairly sure that was Dave Davies playing that wonderfully distorted intro.

And by many standards are considered one of the great rock bands. Personally, I like the Kinks... but I guess you're right... they really are under-rated.

I can understand not liking the music of The Police, but to insult someone like that...come on...Sting is not someone I'd call stupid.

Heard a couple of their songs from "The Last Waltz" on the radio at lunch. What a mediocre band. Crappy vocals, playing, and lyrics. I just never got them.

Kiss played actual musical instruments, at least!!!

and I'd rather have Paul Stanley's voice than the "King's" anytime!

How many people will be holding candlelight vigils at a KISS member's house decades after they die? :eyes:

85. Led Zep
Even though I love a lot of their stuff, there are way too many music "fans" my age who think they were the only rock group in existence during the early seventies. I just think they are cited too much at the expense of a lot of other great bands. I don't think it lessens the quality of their music in anyway, but don't think they live up to the enormous hype that now surrounds them.

And yeah, Kiss are perhaps less qualified for "greatness", but I don't hear many people call them great. I think they're more visible as pop cultural icons than they are recognized for any sort of groundbreaking music on their part.

89. The Rolling Stones
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 01:53 PM by GumboYaYa
are by far the most overrated "great" rock band IMO. Describing Jagger's voice as shitty is generous. These guys may have been a decent club band in their day, but IMO do not merit consideration in the Pantheon of rock gods. Besides Jagger, Keith Richards is only okay on the guitar. I don't get the idol worship of the Stones. Their music just doesn't do it for me.

91. Rush. That was the biggest band when I was in high school.
I never understood what was soooo great about them. I hated the lead singer's whiny voice... can't remember his name now.

gawd, i'm old.
