On July 9, 2003, a distinguished group of Americans joined together to send a remarkable letter to Congressional leaders about the danger our planet faces from near earth objects (NEO's). The letter was also sent to President Bush and his cabinet, the Secretary General of the United Nations and to leaders around the globe:

"Dear Members of Congress:

We write to you today as concerned citizens, convinced that the time has come for our nation to address comprehensively the impact threat from asteroids and comets."

..fight terra from the outer limits..NOW! :nuke: from above?! Hummmmm?!

1. good work!
Glad to see a fellow DU'er concerned with the NEO threat. I've started doing a lot of research into this area as well and have considered a Congressional writing campaign of my own.

3. Oh THAT Neo! I thought it was about the threat from Keanu Reaves
which, admittedly, is a lot scarier.
WATCH THE SKIES!
(Sorry, I know that this is a very serious threat. On the other hand, I also know what the odds of getting a Republican Congress and Uncurious George to grasp its seriousness. Thus, we might as well laugh.)

4. I knew before even looking that these two would be involved

Carolyn Shoemaker has discovered more comets than any other living astronomer. Her tally includes 32 comets and more than 300 asteroids, including the co-discovery of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which collided with Jupiter in 1994. Dr. Shoemaker, who earned her doctorate in astronomy from Northern Arizona University, is especially interested in the discovery of asteroids and comets and investigation of ancient impact structures.

David Levy is an accomplished astronomer and writer. He has discovered 21 comets, 8 with his own observatory in southern Arizona. With Gene and Carolyn Shoemaker, he discovered Shoemaker-Levy 9, which broke apart and collided with Jupiter in 1994, causing the largest explosion in recorded history. David Levy is also the science editor for Parade Magazine, an Emmy-winning television writer, and has published 29 books on science and astronomy.

<snip>

If anyone remembers what the S-L 9 comet did to Jupiter, you can appreciate what would happen if such a large object were to strike earth. Of course they have in the geological past. A asteroid hitting near the Yucatan peninsula is what probably wiped out the dinosaurs. This is one of those low probability but devastating consequences events that we are very bad at planning for. I hope we get some additional funding for this.

8. If the GOP learned that a 6 mi wide rock would hit the earth . . .
they'd spend the next 6 months trying to figure out how to blame liberals.
