My first grandson's name is William (after my deceased hub) and a great
name it is. My daughter is pg with number 2 and we are all trying to come up with a name. As with most traditional southern folks (probably so for others, but I can only speak for my clan), we name our children after those who have gone before. What with long lives and all, too many are still kicking so we are really finding ourselves limited. Every name I mention seems to have someone yucky connected with it (this seems to be case if one had lived long enough. I am really beginning to feel sorry for this guy as his brother had a name almost from the start and he still has zilch. You are all wonderfully bright, creative people, please give forth with your suggestions. Thank you, in advance, for your time.

3. My father's name was Adam
and if I had had a son, that's what I would have named him:)

Franklin(as in Delano Roosevelt)is a good name..not overused,and has a good solid nickname(Frank).

Irish names are great: Brendan,Padraig,Sean,Seamus,Aidan etc

You could always use a family name(surname)for a first name,if you have any that sound good:)

4. Our male family names include
Henry, Michael, Daniel, Richard, Robert, Guy, Eugene. I love the idea of naming children after relatives. It is a tradition in my family as well, though we are not Southern (South St. Louis, maybe). If we have a son, I want to name him Henry, but my husband wants Paul.

17. I think it might be French, but there are definatley
a lot of "Guys" in Britain. I think in France it's pronounced "Gee".

9. My daughter's middle name is Eve and that is what she goes by.
I'm not sure that she and her hub would be okay with Adam, but I think it might be good.

6. Ain't nothing wrong with naming the kid
after a living person. Especially if you have a wealthy bachelor uncle in the clan.

12. Sweetie, if you were close you'd get a hug, like it or not.
Mostly, there are beautiful single aunties in the clan and the money is mostly in my open, loving hands. It is about being healthy and happy in ones own skin.

11. Why not look to departed regional heros you have?
There are certainly many from your neck of the woods.

My dad's name was Jacob and he was a very great man...feel free to borrow it if it appeals to you :-D

16. The name Jacob is wonderful. Maybe it is time for something new.
I really, really like that name. I am going to suggest it to my daughter. We have many, many names from the past but perhaps it's time to think about something different.

18. Keep me posted
My dad would be tickled to know there's a namesake out there. One of my closest friends attended my father's funeral (she was pregnant at the time) and after hearing his eulogy, she named her son Jacob..it was quite a thrill and JAKE is a great nickname.

13. I love the name William
I love it so much that's what I named my son. My jewish sister-in-law has a tradition which I think is wonderful as well as practical. She gave her children names that began with the initial of the most recently deceased family member.

When grandparent William died, she decided to call her son Weston. It's a respectful gesture but also allows her son to become his own person.

Congrats on the birth of grandchild #1 and the impending birth of grandchild #2.

15. You are so dear. Your message made me teary. My now gs, who is named
after my deceased husband and my daughter's father is fun and such a joy. However, I want the next one to feel as loved and special as his brother and that is why it is so hard to find a special name for him.

20. Naming is a deeply profound matter
but in the end kids blossom into complex, full-blown human beings with ideas and opinions of their own. I agonized my entire pregnancy as to what I was going to name my child (I didn't know his gender until they pulled him out of me). There was a minor brouhaha in the delivery room when my obstetrician suggested a different boy's name for him than what I'd chosen. Even though I was not in any "position" to argue, I let it be known that his input was welcome as far as bringing my son safely into this world and after that he should butt out.

My son was the first grandchild for my parents. He walks on water as far as they're concerned and he feels the same way about them. When he turned 10 he changed his nickname from Billy to Bill. When he reached 21 he changed his nickname from Bill to Will. A few letters have changed but their 6'5" grandson is just as precious to them now as when he was a chubby, bald-headed newborn.

Your next grandchild will feel just as special as his brother because he will be equally loved and cherished. Discovering the new emerging person will be just as joyous the second time around.

Enjoy these early days, they pass so quickly.

21. Oh, that was was such a special post. You are right, names means so
much, that one must be thoughtful and careful when choosing. It is really a problem because my daughter is very upset that number 2 is not a girl (it was hard enough with the first one but she was so hoping for the second to be a girl). I was really sure about having girls and happy that I got what I wanted that I probably skewed my daughters toward thinking that having daughters was the only way to really have children and be content. All of this had really come back to bite me. Being around my gs had made me so balanced in many ways. He is a loving person and that really is what life is all about. Not ones sex or any other of the outward trappings of life.

23. We have so many people named after my mom and my dad that this
generation are left without names unless their cousins all have the same names or some form of it. There are actually about 5 that have the same name, either as second names or as some form of the sir name.

24. From a 11th generation Southerner
Congratulations!
My heritage is English and German. William is a frequent name in my family.
Personally I love this about the South! With the exception of double names: Dixie Lee (a cousin–jokes abound!) and so forth, where's the poetry?
For a heathen, I can't help but I love the old Biblical names: Elijah and Jacob, Hannah and Rachel and so forth. If I had a child I would choose from the Hebrews. Beautiful names!
I hate trendy names and tend to love names that have beauty, grace, strength and timelessness.
How about naming the child after someone deeply respected in any field? Find one you like and suggest it to the parents. How about choosing a name that reflects someone from your culture or religious beliefs?
Whatever you choose, it should sing!
