what is your silliest fear?
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 04:14 AM by ffm172
I have to admit, I am afraid that I drop the keys in the chink between elevator and floor. :eyes: I don't know why but I have that fear since I am a kid. That the keys are falling all the way down and it will be a pain in the ass to get them back.

20. Other mental stresses?
Do you also suffer from agoraphobia? I know when I went through my "nervous breakdown" I became severely agoraphobic and claustraphobic...even though, when things got too bad, I hid under the bed and boxed myself in! I think my "claustrophobia" was not very real, it was more a fear of being restrained or not being able to move freely.

10. Flying
I am afraid to fly on planes (flying in dreams is cool). I have no idea where this came from. But, I will go into mini-panic when I fly. I also will not sleep (if I can help it) because I am afraid if I get too comfortable and 'not afraid' that is when the plane will fall from the sky!

17. It is tough!
I really want to go to Europe. But the thought of being on a plane for 8 hours makes my palms sweat! I have even explored taking a boat. I figure, I have a better chance of surviving a boat disaster as opposed to a plane dropping from the sky, which doesn't ever happen. I really don't know why I get so freaked out by it.

22. well, considering that planes are going down
that phobia is quite understandable. But unfortunately it is restricting you to where you can go. And a ship trip is more expensive I expect. I would get sick on the boat. The couple of trips I made to Great Britain taking the ferry was enough for me.

29. Planes v. boats
To me, it is irrational because I know planes are one of the safest modes of transportation. I don't get sea-sick, so I am not worried about that. However, I know I am a great swimmer, my flying abilities are somewhat lacking! :) In my mind, I look at how I can escape something. I guess the real fear is feeling restrained in some fashion. But, I will go to Europe someday!!!

27. Dear Lord, I'm afraid of flying, as well!
I haven't flown since before 9/11, and this fear definitely restricts travel. You have to overcome it, but I haven't yet. I once had an anxiety attack and racing heart on a flight from NYC to Helsinki. I now know I was just overtired, from working long hours to prepare for my trip. But they were so wonderful to me, I would always recommend FinnAir. I was terrified that I was having a heart attack. The flight attendant assured me that I wasn't, and I was 29, but this woman sat with me, and held my hand, except for when she had to serve breakfast, for the next six hours, which I did not think I'd survive. She just told me to move to Finland, so I wouldn't have to fly again, which I seriously considered, LOL! But I was in such rough shape, at the time. While she was gone, the plane's purser sat with me, and gave me oxygen. I must look Finnish, since they began talking to me in that language, but after they found out I was American, they still couldn't have been kinder to me. Fly FinnAir, if you ever can. These were incredibly nice people.:-)

33. I feel you!
I have to mentally prepare myself to fly. I say my prayers, do my magick rituals, and I am still a mess. I usually try to read, but soon as turbulence hits, I start into.."please remove the winds, make this flight smooth" chant (in my head). When it stops, I thank the gods and ask them to make the rest of the flight like the smooth part. But, the next "bump" and I am a-chanting again! :)

I have had a friend killed in a plane crash, but I was always nervous before that.

I am glad that in your time of need, someone was there to comfort you!

41. Oh, goodness, I am so sorry!
I am always afraid, but never as bad as this! But I sure identify with you! The last time I flew, across the country, in 2000, I sat next to a kid who was playing loud rap music. I wanted to smack him! Perhaps my annoyance helped my fear, plus I was also really sick, with a head cold, so had two brandies during my lay-over in the airport bar. But I have found that having a drink, on the plane, just makes things worse, as it did on my trip to Helsinki. The one thing that you have to remember (despite your friend, and I'm so sorry) is that flying is, statistically, absolutely the safest way to travel. I try to.

And I thank you for your sympathy. You sure have mine. I will always think of that lovely Finnish girl, who told me of her family and held my hand, as my guardian angel.O8)

I sincerely appreciate your compassion, and you have mine. Someday, I hope that we're seated next to each other, on a flight. I find that talking with kindred spirits has helped me, often. I've met many nice people and spent the flight talking, which has really helped. But it's not going to be soon, for me.

39. Right with you, BtA.
I haven't yet gotten on a plane in my life. And by now the anxiety has grown so immense over the years, it really seems daunting. To me, it's not the idea of crashing or being so high up that bothers me -- it's more the idea of being sealed in this metal tube with **NO** choices: "You say you want to get off the plane now? Sorry, bub, you'll have to wait a few hours!":scared:

I am going to tackle this -- I've been thinking about air travel more and more in the past year, which was once in itself impossible to do.

I have no idea how I'll hold up, but I'm gonna do it. My mother-in-law owns a condo in Honolulu, so a trip to Hawaii from Southern CA would be a good start. It takes about 5 hours, I think.

For starters, my wife wants me to fly in a helicopter from SoCal to Catalina Island -- 15 minutes by helicopter. That sounds feasible!

Hang in there --

21. I think locking the keys in the car is quite common
Some months ago I was at my moms and drove her car (I went to her place with mine). Then I left and went to my bf (with my car) and only when I was at his place I put my hands in my jacket pockets and found out that I had my mom's car key in there. I called her right away. Fortunately she found the spare key and the next day I send her the other key back. Silly me :eyes:

48. I am grateful for my remote key ring, since I have done this, often.
The worst time was when I drove to the corner store, to mail a letter, and found I couldn't get back into my car. I was only out of it for the seconds it took to drop the envelope into the mailbox. But my door was stuck, the car was running, I had no purse or money with me, the passenger side was locked, my dog was jumping up and down, inside (Eeek!), and I was wearing shorts, a ratty shirt and no makeup, since I only expected to be gone for 10 minutes.
:scared:

Since my dog was in the car, I got the courage to go into the store and ask for help. They pointed to the pay phone, but I had no money with me, so they did let me use the store phone. I also called my mother, who helped me out. I locked that poor dog in the car three times, that I can think of. I am so grateful that they've come up with these remote keys, since I, obviously, cannot be trusted.:eyes:

However, in my subconcious....

I think on some level it is an amalgamation of fears of wasps and spiders, both of which I am apprehensive of, but I know they are too small to really hurt me. The xenomorphs of the Alien franchise on the other hand...

30. I'm not even really sure
Ever since I was a small child I've been terrified of chickens that are roaming free.

My grandparents owned a small farm and every time we'd go to their house (almost daily) I would have to walk across the yard to the house in abject terror that the chickens were going to attack me.

I'm still skittish around them and I'm 31.

Love eating them though.

Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 04:39 AM by BlueIris
No joke, someone really thinks that. I can't give you a link, but on Minstrel Boy's blog, there's an interesting discussion about it that I believe happened sometime around the Tuesday after Bush signed Terri's Law. Allegedly, the scientist's theory is that time is literally speeding up, and will reach a critical apex in 2012--I took that to mean, it will be going so fast, that "time" won't "exist." Wacky, no? But you should go research it for yourself if you want to decide what that means.
