are pop-ups getting more persistent?
I have a pop-up stopper on my PC and it worked great for a while, but the last few weeks, going on the internet has really turned into a nightmare with pop-ups galore popping up all over. And, many times they are full screen popups or ones off in the corner that you have to drag to find the X to close it.

Is it just me? I've had my popup stopper on automatic update and have even tried it manually a few times, but with no luck.

2. Yeah, they are
they're getting in through Opera and Firefox now, too. Somebody found another loophole, and it's being opened up...

ads seem to sneak through it.

6. Avant Browser..never get a single pop up...
ever! Avant's pop up blocker is excellent. Since starting to use it 2 years ago the only pop ups I ever see is when I turn the pop up blocker off.

16. *** I Have Avant Browser Also ***
I don't get those sneaky pop-ups either. (Unless I want to disable it for sites that use them for things other than ads.)

I love Avant browser because it's so EASY to control ads/popups/javascripts/active-x/and FLASH.

9. If you haven't already, download some spyware/adware removal tools
AdAware... SpywareGuard... SpyBot Search & Destroy

I think all of those are either freeware or donationware.

Having spyware/adware on your machine is roughly the same thing as opening your front door and inviting everyone in the neighborhood inside for a cup of joe.

Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 11:44 AM by bearfan454
the FREE pop up stopper from:

http://www.panicware.com

or

http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?qt=free+pop+up+blocker&tg=dl-2001&search.x=24&search.y=10

It has worked great for me the only thing is sometimes you have to hold down the CTRL key to click on some things.

17. it's on auto-update
And, I usually click on it and do it manually at least once a week... but, that always says there are no new updates to get.

I wanted a camper with a pop-up
but apparently it's better to just get a hard shell with slide-outs, etc.

14. That's true
The popups tend to leak and if you fall asleep with your foot against the fabric, and it rains, everything inside leeches the water and you end up soaked, too.

What were we talking about?

13. I use Ad-Aware and Spybot
I very rarely get a pop-up. When I do, I know it is probably time to update (I run them both every other day or so, but usually when I get a pop-up it means that one of the programs is going to prompt me to update).

15. Firefox + Norton
I get NO popups, ever. And I run Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and Ad-Aware every night.

That said, I'll probably get ten thousand popups today............

18. I was plagued by casalemedia and tribalfusion popups...
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 12:02 PM by MathGuy
despite having 2 pop-up stoppers installed and being totally free of spyware (per spybot and spysweeper).

I finally solved the problem by going to http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
and getting their hosts.txt file which I then copied to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC per their instructions. No need to install any program, this is just a text file. I have been 100% pop-up free ever since.

Now I frequently get a pop-up from Vonage when I log onto DU. I only get one pop-up though.

23. I wouldn't know. I use Firefox.
Haven't had an unwanted pop-up in ages.

Sounds to me like you may have some spyware on your system there. I recommend running Spybot and Ad-Aware. Just Google-search on those words, and you'll find what you need.
