I don't care if they fire me! I've been set up.
I was recruited for a job that I've recently figured out was to straighten out a SERIOUSLY dynsfunctional team.

They out and out lied to me about it being a competent group - but these people are so screwed up they make Jerry Springer look like Masterpiece Theater. Seriously - you would not believe how messed up this situation is.

I've been set up so the boss doesn't have to be the bad guy - I have to make it work. And so I get to be the bad guy by laying down the expectations and holding people to them.

Pity me.

2. I suppose it's too much to ask that you could just
fire them all and start fresh with a team that knows their butts from a hole in the ground?

7. Well, I have to do it the slow way by setting the ground rules.
I tried to be nice and let people do their jobs - the jobs they've done for years before I was there - right.

I can't tell you how dysfunctional and mentally ill it is. I really can't.

3. I hear you loud and clear.
I work with a great team, but for a totally dysfunctional, negative, nit-picking organization that punishes small mistakes and refuses to look at the corporate structure for what it is...nepotized to death.

6. I love jobs like that
I held three different positions at a software company, all which were to kick ass, take names, and make the department unnecessary. I made my own jobs obsolete, and they just promoted me to another one.

No one is "indespensable", and execs love it when an employee recognizes that, and thrives on it.

People who build up their own job to make themself essential are usually dead weight, and dead weight that is hard to get rid of.

8. I've heard "Didn't anyone warn you this was a hornet's nest you
were stepping into?" from 3 people who have been there longer than 8 years.

That's how long it's gone on.

I'm not playing along.

10. Here's my game plan: I'm drawing a line. People can live with it -
it'a a VERY generous line. Or they can fight it. They can fire me if the heat gets too hot.

But I'm NOT playing the dysfunctional game. I won't do it.

I suspect I'll be a transitional person. When I'm done and gone my successor will say "Wow, great team, everything's together - why did he quit?"

12.  i have been there and i think you're right...... and you shouldn't play
it. i couldn't either.

i have walked into crazy set ups, and it just felt so draining and pointless. good for you if you can shake things up. but the truly nutty places i've worked, is such an ingrained culture, it goes right to the top. they want to be dysfuctional, some compaines.
good luck!

16. Bettyellen, I'm so glad to hear that. Really. Thanks.
I just wish if they wanted an agent of change they'd let me know.

I've talked to a few people who are blown away by the weirdness of it.

I think I can make the changes - but I don't thik I'll last much longer than that.

11. I don't pity you - you're in a perfect position!
Once you straighten it out - if you can, and if you do it the right way - the boss asshole will be fired, and you will get his/her job.

This is your chance to totally fuck "The Man" and come out ahead.

15. "Wipe the slate clean"
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 12:13 AM by WinterStorm
When a homeowner has a problem with an infestation they call out an exterminator. Sometimes you have to get rid of the problem before the "termites" destroy the entire house. It will cave in even if it looks unscathed. Most of the time "termites" chew on the same old piece of wood and they never move into another area of the house. By the time that you call an exterminator too much damage has been done and there is no turning back.
