5. I knew they had to bring in Aaron Boone
The Boonies rock.

So does Mariano, and Torre played a smart chess game by bringing him in when he did. I thought it might backfire, but it was perfect.

Those Damn Yankees.....

2. Congratulations to the New York Yankees
One of the best series I've ever witnessed. It is a shame someone had to lose tonight's game.

I'm convinced very few will watch, but good luck in the Series against the Marlins anyway...

Lets just say I as a Baltimore fan the other majority of the year was getting my revenge ;) and by the way I am still pissed off about that. The stinkin New York press acted like he was a hero, no shit, if he had done that in Baltimore, :argh:.
:argh: to the Yankees and painful memories.

6. The Curse: Soooooooooo close but no cigar!
Just like the Cubbies, this ALCS was designed to go to the very end, to let Will Pitt and the Red Sox fans get close enough to the Series to taste it, only to have it snatched away at the last possible second!

Sorry, Will (you too, Matcom!). I shouldn't gloat, and I won't anymore. What a heckuva series between two mortal enemy teams! The Sox left it all on the field; my hat's off to them. Martinez was dominant for 7 innings, but they left him in one batter too many.

NOBODY beats Rivera in the post-season!!

GO YANKEES!!

12. Warning to Marlins Fans
Better turn your TV's down during the World Series. Joe Buck and Tim McCarver are the biggest drooling sychophants for the Yankees known to man. And to make them even more objective, they've added Bret Boone, the BROTHER of Yankees Aaron Boone to the booth. All you'll be hearing throughout every game is how the Yankees are unbeatable, how amazing they are, how Joe Torre is a better manager than God Almightly, how brilliant Yankees GM Brian Cashman is(what a name for a Yankees GM), and rhetorical questions like "Tim, why did the Marlins even bother to show up this year?" Turn your TV's down.

21. mccarver
if you are a fan of the game, and listen to tim mccarver you would know that he is one of the more unbiased announcers out there (unlike joe morgan who makes no bones about hating the yanks since they get compared to the big red machine)

hells tim was fired by the yankees as an announcer because he wasnt a 'homer' and called games down the middle.
and bret till the end did his best to hide his favoratism to the yanks with his bro there. i think he was a poor choice nevertheless cause he didnt quite fit in the booth with two professionals like mccarver and joe buck.

61. Grady Little
Boston's manager got burned, that's all. If he brings in a reliever and the reliever squanders the lead, the second-guessing will never stop. He probably hoped to get out of the inning but it didn't happen. The second-guessing will never stop now, either.

Baseball is full of these situations. Go with your gut against your better judgement, you can look brilliant. Or you can have people shaking their fists at you!

I've seen Earl Weaver - supposedly a top shelf manager - lose important games by overmanaging. Grady Little didn't do that tonight. That's baseball for you.

It's my belief that the Yankees are the best looking team in baseball. Other teams have hotties, for sure, but I just think we have more on average. Derek Jeter, Alfonso Soriano and Bernie Williams make squeal like a 13 year old girl at an N'Sync concert. :loveya: Of course, if I really wanted Bernie I would have to fight my 62 year old mother, who also squeals like a 13 year old girl when she sees him. :)

I also think Hideki Matsui is adorable. I don't know why, I just think he is. :)

And maybe Posada too. Mussina is pretty easy on the eyes too (from my straight male perspective). Also, Torre has a face that you just can't hate. He looks like the world's favorite uncle or grandpa (couldn't you just see him playing the grandfather in The Princess Bride?).

Oh, and Bernie is apparently very nice. Very much the antithesis of the superstar athlete. Quiet, private, plays classical guitar.

Aaron Boone was acting anxious in the dugout during the sixth inning last night and Derek Jeter told him, "Don't worry....soon the ghost will start stirring."

Mo is not just the best relief pitcher in post season history..........the best relief pitcher EVER......I know theres been alot of great relief pitchers in the history of the game..........but I don't think any of them have come close to what Mariano has accomplished and continues to accomplish........he threw close to 50 pitches tonite !!!!

Look at Bucky Dent's stats from 1978. Baseball history is always filled with the unsung hero.

44. Giving props to the BoSox
I'm a huge Yankees fan, but I need to give some props to the BoSox. That was one of the most thrilling games of baseball I've ever seen. Boston, ya'll have nothing to be ashamed of, the BoSox played their hearts out. :toast:

That was truly one for the ages.

58. Amen to that
Plenty of teams fold when the going gets tough. The Sox played every pitch hard. There isn't a single person on that team, including Grady Little, Martinez and Wakefield, that have anything to apologize for in this game. Great at the plate, great in the field (unbelievable, at times) and great on the mound ... for both teams.

What a game.

48. I really need to share this..
I feel a need to post this. I don't know if anyone will read it or not...it's OK if they don't. It's just a little story to explain what the Red Sox mean to me,and why this hurts so much. On April 20,1912,my grandfather was at the first opening day at Fenway Park. In 1918,right after the end of the World Series,my father was born. All through my childhood,he always had season tickets for all the home games. The excitement and wonder of going to games with my Dad will be some of my very best memories till the last day of my life. He waited his entire life to see the Sox win the Series, and never did. We've come close, but never quite got there. I moved away from New England for 12 years and moved to the Florida Keys. Every year,I came back up for a couple of games. I was here when the Sox had their worst loss at home(22-2,I believe),on the day that the ultimate Sox fan,Lib Dooley died. Even then,I stayed till the end. This year...once again, for the first time in years,I truly believed. I also believed that Pedro was done after the 7th..but what do I know? I just wanted to share the story of one Red Sox fan(there are many such stories)to help those that don't understand what it means to us. I'm sorry if this sounds maudlin, and I'm sure that next year,as always, hope will rear it's tantalizing head again.
Congratulations again to all you Yankee fans :)

I know there's no crying in baseball, but time is moving on for me,too...I hope somebody understands.

51. I really feel what you're saying..........

You're wrong about one thing though.......there is crying in baseball....how can you not cry, if you love so much.......I know how you feel, trust me, yes even Yankee fans cry too......it's the nature of fandom.....good times , bad times, we've all been there ...............

52. great post Siobhan
My dad was born in 1918 as well and our mutual love for the Red Sox is one of the few connections that we have manged to maintain. I am fortunate in that my father is still alive and will yet live to see the Red Sox win the World Series. Wait 'till next year. Red Sox Forever.

55. Great Story
I'll say it again: Bosox fans are the best fans in baseball. I'm a Yankee fan and I've been a Yankee fan all my life. I was doing friggin' backflips tonight when Boone sent that baby over the wall - and i even tirned the TV off and read for 10 minutes when the Sox were up in extra innings - I simply couldn't stand it. Luckily, I always turned it back on in time for the Yankees ups. I missed Mariano's excellence though.

Congrats to the Red Sox for a great season and a helluva series.

Go YANKEES!

65. I understand *completely*, SC...
Baseball, for all its wonders, can be heartbreaking. As an Angels fan, I know a little bit about suffering -- they finally won a WS last year (their first), after a 42-year drought. I wish my dad, who made sure we had Angels tickets every year, had been alive to see it.

"The New Yorker's" senior fiction editor and baseball writer, Roger Angell, wrote a beautiful piece on the gut-wrenching 1986 WS, when Boston lost in 7 games to the Mets. The essay is titled, "Not So, Boston." I recommend this highly. The specifics are:

"Not So, Boston" by Angell, Roger
Article in "New Yorker" 1986
Reprinted in Angell's book "Season Ticket" (p.310(38))

I recall that a Boston fan, after the 1986 swoon, and agonizing over his beloved Red Sox, said words to the effect of "They took our grandfathers, they took our fathers, and now they're coming for us."

I too would like to see Boston win a World Series in this lifetime, so I hoist my glass to you and say, "Let's look forward to that."

Kind regards -- :toast:

74. Thank you for sharing.
I understand as much as humanly possible, without actually being in your shoes. My condolences to all Red Sox fans. It was an absolutely amazing series. Though the playoffs did not turn out as many of us had hoped, they will be remembered fondly -- once the pain subsides (by me, at least). And I really do think the Red Sox and Cubs will be in the thick of it again NEXT YEAR!

Take care.

Cheers!

70. Good news for Chicago/Boston DUers.
Fox and Rupert Murdoch just lost a ton of money. A Cubs/Red Sox World Series would have been the most watched series in years. Now I think viewership will be average or down.
