I will be boycotting the World Series this year
America has no World Series in 2003.

Why would I want to waste my time see two teams that most Americans have no interest in? For the Yankees, the same old boring players, again playing in October, as if it's their birthright, and having to listen to their spoiled, overindulged fans. For the Marlins, it's just an expansion team that cannot appreciate the value of a World Series championship team: they would only firesell their players away if they were to win. That's not how you defend a world championship. Instead, I plan on ignoring the World Series entirely, so as to spare myself the aggravation of seeing two teams I either dislike, or find repetitive and boring. I suspect many Americans agree. I will root for a quick outcome, so we can return to Fox programming. During next week's games I will instead be watching rented video tapes of old World Series's, past baseball highlights (maybe the Ken Burns "Baseball" series). I ask all of you who have no interest in this series to join me.

2. I never watch baseball
but I watched these games. No interest in watching the world series now though. I don't think I'm the only one.

3. You and me both
I have a feeling this will be a very low-rates series, other than Florida :puke: and New York.

4. You gotta love the Boys of October!
Maybe its their "birthright" because they find ways to WIN!!

Mariano Rivera: 3 shutout innings!

Boone: Game-winning homer!

Baseball just doesn't get any better than this: Game 7 goes extra innings in the fiercest rivalry in sports!

because Steinbrenner has so much money to spend. It's easy to win when you can afford to field an all-star team.

8. Wait a second
I would not be that bitter. Hell, the Yankees may be winning now; but that doesn't mean that they are going to be winning ten years from now.

All teams go in cycles. I am sure that there have been times when the Yankees fielded pathetic teams. And I am sure that they will field pathetic teams in the future again.

But I was never a fan of baseball. I've always loved football. But my favorite team, the Washington Redskins, has seen better days.

9. Exactly
MLB has sucked since the strike. When the Sox-Cubs had a chance to play the World Series, it became interesting again.

Oh well, Faux will be stuck with an expensive black hole ratings wise and it couldn't happen to a better Murdoch.

10. So we should watch only popular baseball teams?
The Marlins are a great "throwback" team. They play like an 80's team, with good speed and defense. If you don't like watching Florida, you don't like baseball. Here's one of those "many Americans" that disagrees with you.

15. I still feel kinda bitter towards the Marlins for beating the Indians...
back in '99. However, I'm not saying that Cleveland deserved to win that one. The Marlins clearly were the better team.

I think my feelins stem from the fact that there's simply no kind of appreciation in Florida for winning a World Series. At least not to the same depth that exists in long-time traditional MLB cities. For MLB cities like Cleveland, as well as Chicago and Boston, Baseball has long been an integral part of the civic culture.

When Cleveland peaked in the mid to late '90s, everyone knew the team and its players. To many Indians fans, they were almost like family. Had the Indians won Game 7 in the 1999 World Series, we probably would have had a month-long celebration.

Did Florida really care about winning that World Series? What happened to the 1999 champion Florida Marlins? The owner broke up that team before the following season!

I know the pain of Cubs fans as well as those of the Red Sox. You guys feel the pain of losing to a much greater depth than the Marlins fans will ever sense the joy of victory.

29. Exactly!
You put your finger on why I'm also still a little bitter against the Marlins. Although I disagree that they were a better team than the Indians, I think they just got lucky in that last game.

13. I usually don't watch ball
I have my teams and when they're on I watch. This year though I got REALLY turned on at the idea of a Cubs/Sox final. No blame to the Marlins here they deserve to be where they are. But now, I don't care. We could have had the most watched world series in 60 years I bet. But nope, couldn't happen that way could it...fuck it I ain't watching...just don't care anymore.

14. I love baseball but this feels like same old, same old
I was so excited this year at the strong probability that at least one long absent, historically meaningful team would make it to Series. But I feel so let down and disinterested right now. Nothing against the winners. They played good comeback ball to win their final games. I think I am pissed at the fates.

16. Wouldn't the simple solution be for the other teams...
to be better?

I mean I'm not a baseball fan, but isn't the purpose of sports for the best teams to play and to win? These two teams won. That means that this year they are the best. If what you want to see is two teams not as good play each other then what in god's name is the point?

In fact it's a difference of one run.

18. Yeah..one run and more than a few pennant and series wins....
I'm just sayin'. Clearly with this many wins under their belt the yankees are a phenomenal team. So why would any fan of the game not want to watch a team with skill play it? I just don't understand that concept.

23. You already said in another thread that you don't understand it.
And I already explained to you that interest in a team is not based on just technical expertise and logic, it's passion and loyalty. It's caring about the ballplayers that you've watched all season long and not caring so much about ballplayers you haven't invested your time in. You don't have to believe me if you don't want to and you can keep asking this question, but it seems to me if you don't care, you won't understand.

21. In the seven game series the NYY had 30 runs, the Sox
had 29.

My point is that the differences between the two teams are minimal.

...I can't see wasting my time watching two teams I have no interest in, and screw the rest of the country. They can watch or not; I don't care.

I will predict, however, that ratings for the WS will drop from the level of the hard-fought league championship series.

27. Well put, I'm so fucking sick of the
arrogant, Stankee Yankees, their entitlement mentality, and their, as you put it, "spoiled, overindulged fans." It's only what, the fifty millionth time they've been in the Series since just 1990? BOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the goddamned Marlins-don't even get me started. They played against Cleveland in the 1997 World Series (I live near Cleveland), and won in the last moments of the seventh game after only being a team for four or five years, whereas the Indians had been waiting for something like this for over fifty years. Then the team's owner showed his true colors and trashed the team, not giving a damn that they'd just won the crown of baseball.

BTW, I LOVED it when the Arizona Diamondbacks actually won the Series against the Stankee Yankees! Everyone was making fun of them, taking it for granted that the mighty Yanks would crush them within a few games, and acting like it was, indeed, their birthright. I HATE THE FUCKING YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!1

28. I think there will be the same lack of interest
this year as there was during the "Subway Series" a few years ago, when the Yanks and the Mets went against each other, no one outside of New York gave a shit. If I remember right, that was one of the lowest-rated Series ever.

And I suppose you thought it was boring when Oakland had its dynasty in the early 70s and again from 88-90.

Your team choked away a 2-0 series lead. Again. Get over it.

:nopity:

By the way, "so we can return to Fox programming"? What the hell is that? Ya can't wait for another installment of "Joe Millionaire" and "When Animals Attack"? :)
