CNN: "Pat Buchanan doused with salad dressing"

KALAMAZOO, Michigan (AP) -- Commentator and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan cut short an appearance after an opponent of his conservative views doused him with salad dressing.

"Stop the bigotry!" the demonstrator shouted as he hurled the liquid Thursday night during the program at Western Michigan University. The incident came just two days after another noted conservative, William Kristol, was struck by a pie during an appearance at a college in Indiana.

After he was hit, Buchanan cut short his question-and-answer session with the audience, saying, "Thank you all for coming, but I'm going to have to get my hair washed."

The demonstrator, identified by authorities as a 24-year-old student at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, was arrested and faces a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace. He was released on a $100 cash bond, pending his April 14 arraignment.

Salad dressing for a conservative vegetable! Let's see ... in two days we have been served the dessert (Bill Kristol) and the salad (Pat Buchanan) courses of this "downfall of the right" meal. What course could Delay be?

Throwing stuff at people doesn't advance the dialog, doesn't help persuade anyone of anything except that the protester is a rude child.

I actually respect Buchanan because he doesn't accept the Neo-Con hardline - he goes where his own opinions lead him, wrongheaded though they may be. And he's no friend of the BFEE, which wins him at least a few Brownie points. He's one of the few conservatives that I'm willing to listen to, although I disagree with him about 90% of the time (the other 10% of the time, he's bashing the Bushes, the deficit, or the decision to go to war in Iraq). I understand the frustration of not being heard - liberal voices are more and more being shut out of debate - but Buchanan is no Bush, brooking no dissent.

But even if Buchanan was Tom DeLay, this is unacceptable behavior in what is arguably a civilized society.

And before someone else accuses me of it, I'll admit, I never liked the Three Stooges (lack of Y chromosome).

He's convinced that if I just see the right episode, I'll be converted. The only one that brought me close was the exterminator one -- a stooge carrying a bag of cats to get rid of mice, then dumping the cats into the piano - now THAT'S funny (man, the cats looked mad as hell!)
