The bells at the Cathedral of Madeline here in Salt Lake keep ringing.
It's really sending chills down my back. They've been ringing for about 30 minutes now.

1. They do that when a Pope dies, but all reports say he hasn't died!
Another sign of miscommunication, I guess.

4. reports to the media may be mum
but the archbishop of the area may have gotten the word already and he is authorizing the ringing of the bells.

6. Perhaps CNN was not #1 on the notification list.....
That would make sense.

8. I just read an article
that said that once he dies, all the cardinals are notified before anyone else.

2. Sean, how does LDS and Catholicism perceive each other?
Especially in SLC, I'm curious how members of each "get along."

5. For a while they were divided.

Which is funny, because both the cathedral and the LDS Temple are a few blocks from each other. However over time the two religions have become close in the terms of building a stronger religious community. However the LDS Church is VERY conservative, and the Catholic Church in Salt Lake is pretty moderate, so they do differ politically.

But the religious tolerance has been pretty good for most my lifetime.

You also must realize that Salt Lake's Catholic population is mostly of Hispanic culture(the Catholic population boomed when Salt Lake's Hispanic population boomed). You still have many American Catholics, but the makeup is much different than the LDS Church. So demographically and culturally (the members here tend to be more liberal than LDS folks) they are very different. But there is a respect between the two.
