My dial-up connection speed drops every time it rains......WTF?

1. all those little electrical impulses are like tiny fish. When the wires
absorb the dampness it just means the "fish" have to swim harder, and they get tired. So they rest every so often, and don't get to where they're going as fast.

7. I used to work for an ISP
Every time we got very heavy rain, lots of dial-up customers
would call in complaining their connections were gone to shit.

Apparantly rain leaks into overhead phone cables through
cracks in the cable and increases resistance on the circuit.
You don't notice it much on voice calls but it plays merry
hell with modems.
