Guess my disease/affliction!!
Edited on Fri Jul-18-03 05:20 PM by tjdee
Anyone here have an overactive/underactive thyroid?
How 'bout a bum liver?
Anemics?
Diabetics?

Last month I went to the ER with chest pains, and after a perfect EKG and lung x-ray, they diagnosed me as having an inflammation of my lung lining. My glands were all swollen and I felt really run down, but I seemed to feel better until this past week.
The past week I've felt really weak and rundown. Ahem, *VERY* weak and sleepy and achy. I feel like I'm about to pass out--every minute...earlier this week I was crazy hungry too, but that seems to have tapered off...kinda...I eat really fast when I do eat. Right under my ribs seems to hurt from time to time too. I seem to feel better after eating apples in particular, and overall it's MUCH worse in the morning/afternoon. I did seek medical attention yesterday, and they tested my blood sugar, it was fine.

But they took blood to do thyroid/liver/anemia/further diabetes tests, and I go back tomorrow.

But does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm fairly scared, if only because my kid needs me to be up to snuff (I'm a single parent). Can I beg them to give me any drug to get rid of this weak/passing out feeling? I feel the best after 5pm, and last night I wondered if it was a passing virus. Then this morning I feel much worse.

So, any guesses? I guess there's the whole "see what the doctor says tomorrow" thing, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has any insight/suggestions. Thanks!

1. I think they are on the right track doing the thyroid levels.
Endocrine problems like that can manifest in odd ways

14. Would that have caused the chest pain too?
I know two nurses, and they both said thyroid was a possibility too...but I dunno...maybe I have more than one thing wrong with me??

I've not even been kissing anyone! I know that's a myth, that it's the "kissing" disease, but dang, if I have it, at least I'd like to have gotten a good snog out of it, LOL!

5. I'm sorry you're feeling so awful.
From what you're describing, I'd have to say thyroid problem. Some of my relatives have had very similar symptoms and it was due to an underactive thyroid gland.
Regardless, I hope you find out what the problem is and feel better soon! I'll be sending good thoughts your way! :)

16. Thanks for the kick!
A thyroid problem would explain a lot, as far as my overall health goes....I usually feel on the tired and 'down' side of normal...thanks for the kind wishes too, I am quite creeped out by it!

7. Cant have a perfect chest x-ray with inflammed lung linings
Edited on Fri Jul-18-03 06:40 PM by WannaJumpMyScooter
I would guess without any other information, Pluerisy... which can cause all the above. Other than than that, it could be any of the major viral diseases, or as serious as a spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung)

Good luck, and let us know... especially if I am right

12. Um...but that's ...what...they....
I really should have listened to the parents when they told me to be a doctor, huh.
They said that the x-ray was fine. So does that mean that there's no inflammation? I have a slight cough as well, so that would go with the pleurisy thing....
Thank you!

9. Are your lungs better?
Perhaps, that has something to do with it or weakened you and caused you to get something infectious. Mono, flu, pneumonia. I didn't cough much when I had pneumonia as a child. How about something digestive? I don't know. I have less faith in doctor's after mine diagnosed my chronic sinus infection as allergies for a year and it turned out I wasn't allergic to anything and that a month of antibiotics did wonders. Anyway, it is good that you are getting all these tests. I hope that they find something that you can be treated for and recover or at least remain significantly better on medication.

21. See, yeah....
If they diagnosed it correctly, and it was an inflammation, they didn't give me anything for it but Motrin (and, okay, it was the ER)...I'm glad they did all these tests, though, so I can rule all of them out and get to the bottom of this. There are a few suggestions above in the thread of mono, and now I'm starting to think that may be a possibility as well. Uh oh, LOL, that's prolly why I should just wait for the doctor!

10. I had a pleural lung infection similar to this when I was pregnant
since I had a history of problems I went to the ER and I checked out fine...it took a very good cardiologist to detect that there was a problem with the lining of my lungs...
I was sick for about 3 days and had to suffer through it since I was pregnant with my daughter...
It hurt to take a deep breath.... it made me hyperventilate...

11. Hi tjdee
Feeling run-down can be a huge number of things and may be related (if recent) to the pleural infection of your lungs. However, if you've had the run-down feeling for a long time it's probably a good idea to do a very indepth blood sugar analysis. If your Dr. does this MAKE SURE you do the fasting/glucose test. You fast the night before, you go in, have blood drawn, THEN you drink this horrible sugar syrup and you get blood drawn every 1/2 hour for the next several hours. This will give your doc some good analysis of how your body metabolizes sugar.

Hope this helps, and I hope you feel better soon!

13. I should have said I had gestational diabetes.....
Yeah, when I was pregnant I had to do the drink--I couldn't keep the drink down, twice, so they were like, you've got it babe!

I told the doc all this, but I'll bring it up again--I was kind of surprised that the reading came back normal, actually. I went in fairly certain I had hypoglycemia, due to diabetes, but they checked and it was around 90....so...thank you for the suggestion, I thought they only did the drink for pregnant women....

30. It's awful!
I nearly passed out after that test. The results managed to confuse my Dr too, which was amusing. He had to do some research to figure out what was going on. Turned out it was just a bad case of hypoglycemia. Somewhat rare in guys. Just my luck.

Have you altered your diet to help the blood sugar?

I would suggest staying away from 'white' starches like bleached flour or potatos (or sugar). Eat a minimum of three meals spaced throughout the day. Oh...and I've found that chromium supplements seem to have helped as well, though you might want to check with the Doc on that one. I was actually dubious that the chromium would help, but was willing to give it a try. It seems to have really helped, but isn't a cure unfortunately.

17. Have you been tested for Pernicious Anemia?
When I was 37, I spent a year going to different doctors, telling them how tired and weak I was. I had such terrible stomach gas most of the time, I had to wear pants with stretchy waistbands. Very painful. One day, I got out of bed and fell down. A neurologist discovered I had Pernicious Anemia. It usually happens to older people, so I hadn't been tested for it. All it takes is one little B12 shot every month, and I'm (almost) good as new.

23. She's testing me for regular anemia....
I'll be sure to keep Pernicious Anemia in mind--what I *don't* want to happen is for me to have to go through this for a year like you did....that must have been awful, especially to go to get out of bed and fall down--that's definitely a real fear of mine. I've been feeling this way for almost a week and I don't want to do it another day.

Chestpains, hurting under your ribs, possibly under your sternum?

Did you have a sonogram of your "innerds"?

25. Do your joints hurt?
Sounds like an inflamitory disorder. Try taking 3 Aleve and drinking 32oz of water. If you feel just amazingly better 2 hours later then I would suspect something like lupus, cfs or fibromyalgia.

I'd guess respiratory tract infection, especially if the OP has young children. School age children are the #1 resevoir of antibiotic-resistant respiratory tract infections.

online, doing a symptom search. With time, you'll narrow it down. You can also do a diagnosis search using all these suggestions. I was a single mom. I feel for you.

29. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, Pancreatitis, and GERD...
All thought to be related to a White blood Cell deficiency. What it boils down to is, that I am basically tired all the time, and achy. But strange symptoms manifest at random...infections, swelling (which is why I posted, in response to your lung lining) and a host of others. Basically I do rounds of antibiotics, rounds of acid blockers and pump inhibitors, some strange medicine from canada for my stomache, rounds of enzyme therapy-if ever needed-lucky so far. Basically I am a healthy person, it's just keeping it under control.

The one thing I will stress though, if they test you, find nothing and shoo you out the door, don't give up if you still feel ill. They told my husband I had an ovarian cyst and was just overeacting...how wrong were they???

Take care, Laura

31. NONE of the above!! My results are in!
And, um...

It's not diabetes/thyroid/liver/kidneys/anemia.

She's sending it back for a mono test, but other than that, she thinks it's just "lifestyle". Uh...I have no lifestyle. She did say I could go to a pulmonary specialist since I still have the chest pain and weakness, I guess that's my next step.

Dang. Thanks for your input everybody!
