Evil Dead 1&2 — The Musical

It's a bloody good time.

If you're fond of collegiate humour laid on with a trowel and drenched in enough gore to make Sweeney Todd a bit squeamish, then you'll probably enjoy Evil Dead 1&2 — The Musical, which sprang into life (or should that be "afterlife"?) at the Tranzac Club last night.

Personally, I had a lot of fun, although I would have enjoyed myself even more if certain elements of the show had been a bit slicker.

But we'll come to that in time. First, the good stuff.

The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are cult/camp horror films (made in 1981 and 1987, respectively), both directed by Sam Raimi, who later went on to more establishment material like the 2002 hit, Spider-Man.

The movies are classics of the college-kids-in-a-dark-house genre, able to generate both laughter and screams. After two decades, they're still a slumber party staple and I suppose it was inevitable that somebody would turn them into a musical.
