11. The staff
The Vatican has a shitload of what might be thought of as "career civil servants." Most are clergy, there are a few lay personnel too. They've been cutting the checks and keeping everything in order all along. The Pope's role is 'big picture'--not 'day to day.' Nothing will change until the end of the conclave, when a new Pope is chosen.

8. No, the Conclave must start meeting 15-20 days
after his death. After meeting for 30 days if a 2/3 majority isn't reached a simple majority can be reached but there is no time limit to how long the process takes.

12. He skipped a key point (a rather interesting one too)
When he mentioned this bit: When the Pope dies, the Cardinal Camerlengo (currently Eduardo Cardinal Martinez Somalo) must verify the death, traditionally by calling the Pope three times by his name without response.

What he did not mention is that they actually hit the guy on the head with a silver hammer three times, too (not hard, just a tap, ritualistic).

But he hit all the high points in that explanation.

16. I know it is no longer required....
I've always been of the understanding that while it is not mandated, it is still authorized. They also use the hammer to smash the ring and seal: http://www.ucgstp.org/bureau/wnp/wnp0062/manpope.htm

Every pope has the equivalent of a chief of staff, called the camerlengo. When a pope dies, the camerlengo must first certify that he is indeed dead. The ritual tradition is to strike him on the forehead with a silver hammer, calling his baptismal name three times. An alternative is to place a cloth over his mouth. If he does not respond, the camerlengo declares him dead, authorizes a death certificate and then seals the papal living and working apartments.

Later, the silver hammer will be used to scratch and break the papal ring and seal, so no documents can be forged in his name.

Given that JP2 was a traditionalist, I would not be surprised if his death was traditional in all respects as well. I'm sure we'll know eventually the details of his last moments, after the grief has subsided.

19. Oh you can Bet on that.
Everything surrounding the death of this Pope will be extensively documented. He's the first one to die in the age of the Internet, after all.

15. Reminds me of the "symbolic" slap .............
At Confirmation, the Bishop gives each kid a symbolic slap on the cheek, ostensibly to remind them of Christ's suffering, as they are ushered into the Church as adults.

The kid next to me must have pissed off the Bishop or something, because he hammered that kid so hard, I could see his handprint on Eddie's face.

Years later, Eddie's a closeted gay alcoholic who teaches high school in upstate New York, and he's never stopped hating the Catholic Church. Turned out a priest had had his way with him for years when we were little.

Now, I have to wonder what the Bishop knew.

21. Thanks for the informative link
However, I didn't know that the pope and I shared a birthday, October 16th. THAT gave me a fleeting, queasy feeling.
