Question dealing with Ipods
Hi all. Recently my cd player stopped working for some reason. I was thinking of getting an ipod player and I've heard they're worth it. Once I read someone here on DU said they could pick up AAR with itunes. Does anybody know about this? The main reason I'd want to get an ipod is because I could listen to AAR anywhere I go. Thanks in advanced.

1. I love my iPod
I think it is wonderful. I have a 4th gen 40 gig model.

You can get podcasts of AAR from several sources. You can also stream AAR via iTunes. This site has a playlist with a link to a radio station out of Key West that carries AAR:

2. Thanks for replying
I was thinking of getting an ipod so when I go on trips or something I don't have to worry about bringing all of my cd's. That can get old and I'd worry about losing one or something. Heh heh. I was thinking of getting the ipod and joining itunes so I can listen to AAR anytime I wanted. That'd be nice. :) That way if I go camping or something at night I can still listen to my favorite shows. How much was yours?

26. the pls file is bad
That blog says download a .pls file and drag it over iTunes to start podcasting AAR, but when I click on it I see the following text in a firefox window:

NumberOfEntries=1
File1=http://66.132.166.124:9000/

A reply on the blog points out this problem and points to another pls file on a different server, apparently, and I click on that and get the same message.

3. Edited because I googled "podcasting"
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 04:46 PM by gollygee
AAR streams on Itunes, but itunes is just a place to buy your music. It also has online radio available, but only on your computer - not on the ipod - and only when you're online. It stops where you computer stops.

But I love my ipod. I have a 3rd gen 20 gig.

edited to add that you can use itunes even if you don't have an ipod.

edited again because I googled "podcasting" and maybe you can listen to AAR on the ipod anywhere? This is a new concept for me but I will have to continue to read! :D

4. I have a first-gen iPod that's held up very very well
It's practically grafted to me :) . I'm planning on buying another one (with more storage space) later this year, but keep this one.

Podcasting is extremely cool. I haven't had a chance to check it out myself, but all the noise from the street says it's the next big thing.

Have fun shopping! :)

5. Do you have anymore info on podcasting??
I'm interested in that. The main reason why I'm thinking of getting an ipod is because I read here somewhere that you can listen to AAR on it. That's the main reason why I want it.

6. You can download the Air America Radio shows from
http://www.airamericaplace.com/
then go to the archive section, select the shows you want and put them on your computer. Then drag them into iTunes. The next time you plug in your iPod they will be put on it.

10. No, you will have saved the shows to your computer, so you can take them
with you. In the radio button there is a section called talk/spoken word. Then click on the radiopower.org button, that station carries the Thom Hartmann Show, The Mike Malloy Show, and rebroadcasts The Randi Rhodes Show early in the morning. Or try the above link for the Key West station.:hi:

8. I download my Air America shows into my Neuros MP3 80GB
player from White Rose and Air America Place. The Neuros MP3 player has a built in FM transmitter that allows you to listen over an FM radio. This is a real nice feature in the car.

11. I download the shows I want to listen to over the internet.
From these two sites:

http://www.airamericaplace.com/archive.php?mode=show&id=8

http://www.whiterosesociety.org/

I'll download the show then hook up my Neuros mp3 with a USB cable and put the show on my mp3 player.

12. No, you DOWNLOAD the shows online
Doesn't matter where you are, as long as you have a net connection to connect to www.airamericaplace.com

You don't get to listen 'live' but Air America Place cuts out all the commercials, so you can hear the 3-hour shows in about 2 hours.

It's the only way to fly.

15. Right... you got it.
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 05:39 PM by gmoney
You don't even need an iPod or portable player... you can listen on your computer, or burn CDs or whatever. I burn CDs full of MP3s to listen on my car stereo.

If you do want to listen live, go to www.airamericaradio.com to hear the streaming audio... the magic of the internet.

16. Yes. The nice thing about it, you can pause, fast forward through
commercials, and listen at a time thats right for you. You can transfer all the music from your CDs into the MP3 player. So depending on how much music, audio books, etc etc that you have, you should consider a MP3 player with a lot of GB storage. My 80 GB Neuros is a bit overboard, but I have quite a collection of Old Time Radio Shows in MP3 and right now I'm using 60 GB and room for 20 GB more.

14. I'm not sure if Sirius has a moble unit yet (like XM)...
...but, if you want to listen to AAR live on a mobile device, I'd look into satellite radio.

25. Sirius approached Steve Jobs a few months ago.
They issued a press release that Steve turned him down on their offer to create a handheld iPod device that could pick up Sirius stations. He turned them down though, with no comment to the press about it. Searching Google news, I couldn't find it right away, but it's out there somewhere. It was pretty exciting to me at the time.

19. I hope I didn't contribute to your confusion
:)

I looked at getting satellite radio, but I couldn't justify adding yet another monthly bill to the pile. :(

But, believe me, once you have an iPod you will never want to listen to the radio again. I take it with me pretty much wherever I go, and when I forget it, I resent having to listen to radio with all those #$%& commericals :grr: Plus, you can find so much good spoken word stuff out there--free and otherwise. I've gotten into listening to audiobooks and podcasts quite a bit. Having an iPod really opens up another world.

20. Very nice
Earlier tonight I went to Radio Shack and had to order one. I should be getting it either Wednesday or Thursday. It was around $299 so that was quite pricy. Nothing for me for a long time but it's better than having to buy cd's and all that stuff. Do you get access to the radio stations and word stuff with the player or do you have to join up with itunes? And how much is itunes a year?

23. Ah okay
Sorry if I'm confusing but I'm just trying to get on with the whole IPOD thing. Hehe. I noticed on the site it was a freedownload. So you don't have to pay for their services and you can listen to radio stations on there and stuff? I'm just trying to figure it out and stuff so when I get the thing I'm not totally clueless. ;)

You can't play radio on an iPod. Only audio files. You can pay to download archived shows from AAR's website, but I see that as sort of pointless - unless you missed the show.

I don't have an iPod, I have a Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra. 30GB model for less than $200 (20GB iPod costs $300) plus it supports more audio formats and has those neat-o sound alterations and optimizations that Creative Labs is famous for.

It's interface isn't as slick as the iPod, but well worth the sacrifice to save $100 and get an extra 10GB. And it's software isn't as intuitive as iTunes - I still haven't quite gotten the hang of it.
