aL gore endorses ratzinger for pope
Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 10:58 AM by sniffa
jeeez, this is just wrong! before any of the cardinaLs have had a chance to vote he throws his weight behind ratzinger. sure this may sound Like sour grapes coming from a hard-core arinze supporter Like myseLf, but it's not.
the cardinaLs shouLd have a chance to vote without the pressure of such a high-profiLe endorsement.

i'm at Least gLad that he stiffed Liebermann (he didn't even caLL him to Let him know of his decision to endorse ratzinger, instead of joe).

5. I'm just kidding, of course.
But after he appointed Wolfowitz head of world bank, it seems like * just might have the brass balls to try to put a neocon in the Vatican.

3. Ratzinger was a member of Hitler Youth, and is WAY conservative
let's hope there's a Latin American or African Pope appointed.

12. Didn't the Vatican help some of them flee to South Smerica?

I read some stuff on this awhile back but I don't remember much of it.
I just found this on some discussion board online so who knows how accurate it is:

<snip>
The Catholic church. The claim that members of the Catholic hierarchy were instrumental in obtaining documents, cash, and safe passage for many escaping Nazis is only barely scandalous these days. The benign view is that individual clerics acted out of humanitarian concern, believing they were aiding refugees from postwar communist persecution, and were unaware of their charges' sordid pasts. Others say the Vatican knew quite well what was going on but wanted former Nazis as allies in its struggle against the reds. A figure commonly named in this context is Alois Hudal, an openly pro-Nazi German bishop in Rome who is said to have helped engineer the escapes of dozens if not hundreds of Nazis--including Eichmann, who was living in Argentina when the Mossad caught him in 1960, and Franz Stangl, commandant of the Treblinka death camp, who ultimately made his way to Brazil and was captured there in 1967.

11. NO Africans or Latin Americans, PLEASE!!!
Ratzinger is 78 years old, which is I guess not absurd for a Pope (you don't want them too young), but I doubt he'll win.

Anyway, 3rd world leadership is more conservative than 1st world leadership. Let's hope for a good progressive Italian.

9. I'm not sure Gore is all that high profile in the Catholic hierarchy,
even in the US. And certainly not outside the US.

Outside the US, having an American ex-vice-president endorse somebody might well have the opposite effect ... at least to the extent Gore's high profile there.

14. Is Al Gore Catholic?
If not then why is he doing this? Even if he is Catholic then why is he doing this? I don't see what the point is. Maybe someone can explain this to me.
