I leaning towards Compaq since they use the same at work....What processor should it have Intel or Athlon? Speed & memory. I am a little rusty with what is new on the market. Kids have all the games so the computer does not need to be used for that. Compaq has a build site. I steered them away from Dell. If I can save them some $$ they will buy a larger monitor/lcd .

3. What's it going to be used for?
If all they want to do is connect to the internet, balance their checkbook and play solitaire, you don't really need much for that.

Until you know that it's going to be used for it's impossible to say what to get. My philosphy has always been to buy as much computer as you can afford because no matter what you want to do with it, eventually you'll start pushing the envelope of what you originally bought it for.

Of course, I probably push it further than most people. Last year I got a tv tuner card for my computer and am now creating DVD's from shows I record from TV. I had no idea I would be doing that when I bought the computer 18 months ago.

Got a whole lot of bang for my bucks, too. 3.4 GHz w/Multithreading. 2 GB RAM. 400 GB hard disk. 128 MB PCI-E Nvidia graphics. Double-layer DVD burner, plus secondary DVD reader drive. Integrated 7.1 sound. Wireless keyboard & mouse (don't use these though). 8-in-1 flash reader (basically will take almost anything from stick memory to SmartMedia to microdrives). Ultra-quiet BTX enclosure. WinXP Pro. Total price, including tax and shipping was $1900.

My own bias is towards Intel processors; I've had bad compatibility experiences with AMDs in the past.
