parents taking kids to r-rated movies?
i was reading the imdb boards today for discussion about 'sin city' and came across a thread asking about walkouts from the movie. i was AMAZED to read many accounts about people having brought their kids to see it and walking out because of the violence. HELLO! did they even do the slightest bit of research on the movie? did they see the ads? did they LOOK at the MPAA rating? did the title not give them pause? a couple other people on the board also recalled similar episodes in the past, one citing a couple of parents thinking that the south park movie must have been appropriate merely because it was animated. not to mention all the people who mentioned seeing people bringing their YOUNG kids to the movie and STAYING the entire way through even though the kids were obviously scared and freaked out. one poster who works at a video store mentioned a man wanting to rent 'saving private ryan' for his son and asking if it was appropriate, and after listening to him go through a litany about the violence, asking 'but there's no nudity, right?' and RENTING IT for his son on that basis.

i guess my question is, are people really quite this stupid and oblivious?

here's the thread in question by the way: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401792/board/nest/17391778

6. They sell little kid Lord of the Ring toys. I always wonder how any
kid at an appropriate age for the toy would know what the hell the toy's are from? Huh!!

4. Ah violence
So long as the kids don't see BOOBS it's okay.

I don't like the MPAA myself, too many stories about them shafting indie films with NC-17 ratings when the film is tamer than some R rated Hollywood pictures. But that's just showing how tough they can be.

Part of the problem is that there are some R rated movies that are R rated only because of Language. But still, the R does stand for "Restricted" so if you want to take your kids to see it, it is YOUR responsibility to watch it first. I have no sympathy, as mentioned above, for parents who go to an R rated movie (especially one titled "Sin City") and getting upset that it's violent.

I guess my answer to the question is, yes. People are this stupid and oblivious.

12. yes, the MPAA can go overboard
but in this case the r-rating is justified. there is a LOT of graphic violence in sin city. i wouldn't take my 16 year old cousin to see it, and she's pretty mature.

16. Of course
Which is why I think no matter how tame an R rated movie may seem, parents should watch it first then take the kids if they feel it is okay.

7. There was a post here about freepers taking kids to gun shows!
Compared to that, seeing fake violence is pretty tame.

10. Has Jessica Alba ever been in anything for children?
Just asking.

Interestingly enough, she plays a stripper but remains fully clothed thorughout the movie.

9. I saw Sin City on opening night.
I was in a large theatre completley packed full of college students. At the end, we stood up, blinked, and said, "Wow--that was violent."

I can't imagine bringing a child to see anything remotely like it.

11. Yes, people are that stupid and oblivious...
I sat through "Hannibal" (torture enough in itself) a few seats down from a family with young children. Young as in 3ish to 7ish. And to think I wasn't allowed to watch "Dark Shadows" when I was a kid!

15. this is a huge pet peeve for me
i hate it when parents bring children into R rated movies - scary movies or violent ones especially. i want to slap them upside the head (or worse) for doing that to their little ones who are often scared shitless :grr:

17. What's worse is rating some piece of crap like Austin Powers
PG 13. I got suckered into that one.

My ex took my kid to see Freddie Got Fingered. I still haven't gotten over that.

18. There are always STUPID STUPID parents doing this.
:grr:

This is one of my major soapbox issues.

The desensitization toward sexuality and violence in this culture is astounding because of things like this.

Plus, it's inconsiderate toward the other adults who came to see an adult themed film. To say nothing of the poor kid who bursts into tears.

If you need to see the film *that badly*, you get a sitter. Or guess what, you exercise some adult decision making and wait for the DVD to come out.

19. Worst I ever did was take my little one to the last
Harry Potter. We sat in the back, took walks during the "scary" scenes and came back in. There were kids younger than her there, screaming and yelling(with the parents telling them to shut up).

That was a bit intense for her-can't imagine "R" rated(even the PG-13 Star Wars is getting-that means that she will not be going).

20. Babies in ANY movie pisses me off the worst.
I never took my infant son to any movies, for fear that he would become cranky and cry and ruin the movie for everyone else.

But I see parents with babies in movies all the time. And when the baby starts screaming and crying, do they get up and walk out to tend to jr? Hell no. I do, though. I go to the manager and tell him that there is a screaming baby in the theatre ruining the movie for everyone.

And the manager will go remove the parents from the theatre.

I hate to play dirty, but, dammit, when I spend $10 on a movie ticket, I want to be able to enjoy the movie. When my son was a baby, I either stayed home and rented movies, or I asked my parents to watch my son while I went to the theatre.

I don't know why anyone takes babies to places where they shouldn't be.

23. fortunately they now have
a lot of those mommmy and me theaters where you can take the baby, since it's just moms, dads, and babies and toddlers. Wish that had been around when my kid was little.

However, I have seen examples of parents who were cool about it, the baby was quiet and then if he/she cried, they would take it to the back of the theater.

On the other topic, I would never take my son to those really scary films. He did see LOTR when he was 7/8, but he was fine with it. Once I had to take him out of Toy Story 2 when he was 4, since Emperor Zurg
was so scary!

21. People are stupid
Having a kid doesn't make one grow more brain cells. I can't believe people would take their kids to see movies like that.

22. Depends on the kid and the movie content
I do research prior to taking them to a movie. The youngest only goes to flicks that we know are going to be over-run by children. (Animated, god-I'd-rather-be-at-the-dentist types of shows)

My oldest (13) doesn't deal well with scary stuff, violence or "skimpy" actresses. She prefers chick flicks, teen movies, animated, fantasy and so-forth.

My middle girl (5) is my movie buddy. She *adores* psychological thriller stuff. I didn't take her to LOTR because I thought it would be too long. Now we own all three in extended version and it isn't unusual for her to ask to watch one or more on the weekend. (And, yes, she really does sit and watch.) She loved the King's Hospital series that was on ABC for awhile. There was another show with a Catholic priest who investigated the paranormal that she always had me tape for her (came on after her bedtime). She can tell you all about the X-Files series.

I guess what I want to say is that some people see us coming into the theater and immediately begin looking uncomfortable or leering at me as if I'm the worst mother on earth. By the end of the movie, they've realized that not only did my daughter sit through the whole thing without freaking out, but she *enjoyed* it too! It isn't always fair to issue a blanket assumption. Sure, some parents are idiots, but not all of us. Just as adults have different tastes, children do as well.
