I need some Credit Card help
My wife and I are in search of a credit card that is NOT MBNA. The chances of finding a card issued by a responsible, progressive entity are probably slim, but any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

1. get one from a credit union - they are not loan sharks like the rest
regular credit cards have turned into loan sharks - legal ones - they can decide at the drop of a hat to change your interest rate to 24% - and you can't do anything about it - except try to get away from them - but they have you by the $#%@#$@#$ - because now your payment is all interest - if they think you are a risk - they go for the throat and get all the dough they can from you because they don't see that you have a way out

stay away from the loan sharks -

6. I got rid of everything except Bank of America Visa.
They've been very reasonable -- and they've called me a couple of times when I've made large purchases to verify that it was ME.

7. It Depends on What You're Looking for
My best card is from my credit union. Try some of the comparison sites:

http://www.creditcards.com/1/bad-credit.php

http://www.100best-credit-cards.com/

or do a search on "credit card compare". Don't rule out large commercial banks -- they sometimes have good deals.

I have had problems with MBNA too. I needed a quick $25,000 to close on a house, a used a cash advance on my MBNA card. They were glad to do it and gave me a great rate. I figured I could borrow it right back on a home equity loan. Problem was, the extra consumer debt killed my credit rating.

It bumped me into the secondary mortgage market -- insultingly usurious terms, which of course MBNA was not responsible for. But MBNA used the lower credit rating to immediately raise my 3% rate to 22% and double my monthly minimum. THAT burned me. A lot. I will never get an MBNA card again.

13. But is Providian red or blue?
Seems like all the major credit card issuers are red - and Citibank, which is controlled by the Saudis, may be the reddest of all.

14. Even the bluest ones
are predators. It is the nature of the business. Good for you for sticking to your guns and refusing to do business with MBNA. They're one of the worst.

16. Avoid Fleet!
Usurious bastards. They'll promise the moon, then jack your interest rate to 27% if you're 10 nanoseconds late with a payment.

In the immortal words of Tom Waits: the large print giveth and the small print taketh away.

I have a very small balance with these crooks, and it will be paid off in one more month. I'd NEVER do business with them again.

Like most people have advised, my only other credit card is with my credit union, which is the best deal going.

I do have a personal and corporate AmEx, but those have to be paid every month. (AVOID the AmEx "extended payment" option, which will also clobber you with a giant interest rate if they can get away with it.)
