Why Wouldn't Gandalf Just Have An Eagle Take Frodo To Mt. Doom
and drop the ring in?

Its kinda easy to pick apart the greatest work of fiction ever. But that makes the story less fun.

1. Why wasn't the ring given to the Ents to dispose of!

6. The Ents generally can't be bothered to act beyond their woods.
It took Sarumans orcs raping of their woods to raise the Ents ire, and even then they purely focused on his orcs.

11. Ents fighting Oliphants would have been a spectacle!
Good image.

2. Before Saurons fall they couldn't get there.
The Nazgul weren't Saurons only flying minions.

3. Well if you remember the book.
The Eagles would not travel into the lands of men because they would hunt them for stealing sheep. The Eagle wouldn't take him even if Gandalf asked. Plus there are the Nazgul on the flying beasts to consider. Not as simple as all that.

7. there were 9 nazgul
and based on the end of the movie, I don't think the nazgul were that sharp as fighters anyway. The eagles pretty much kicked their asses. AND...They DID come to rescue at the end of the movie. It stands to reason that they could have saved a lot of time and just flown him in with an army of eagles.

14. Yes well the movie is a disgrace to the story and I don't go by it.
You can't just shoot a Nazgul with an arrow and have it die, it's a fucking wraith. Undead creatures (zombies and skeletons excluded) die hard and wield impressive power, a mere arrow would do nothing except maybe piss it off. Even if you shot the mount out from under it, it still wouldn't die. It would just get up and start killing everyone around it. A great Elf Lord or Wizard of the highest power could possibly beat it but no mere mortal would have a chance.

16. The eagles triumphed over the Nazgul AFTER Sauron was destroyed
Presumably they wouldn't have been nearly so successful while the Ring still existed.

17. not in the movie
in the movie the Eagles showed up pretty much at the same time, or right before the ring was destroyed.

After the ring was dropped into the lava, Mordor crumbled and all the orks fled and the nazgul were killed by lava bursts.

5. Because the Nazguls would've spotted Frodo in the open sky,
and so an Eagle carrying him wouldn't have worked. That's why he had to crawl.

10. okay but
if Faramir can shoo one off with an arrow, why didn't they just take 10 eagles, put Frodo on one, some elf archers on the other 9 and fly in?

Seems simple to me. If I wrote Lord of the Rings it would have been a pamphlet. :D

19. Eagle riding Elf archers in the sky, might not do as well as Faramir
on the ground, against Nazguls, especially not so close to Mount Doom, and with the One Ring present.

13. My question is, if Frodo was taking out the trash, why not take it all?
We could have eliminated rap, hip hop, pop music, thomas kinkade, billy "i suck" joel, bon jovi, and a whole shitload of talentless, evil, trash.

They're far more dangerous than some frickin' ring of power. Given the choice, I'd rather life under Sauron, if it means no rap, hip hop, pop music, thomas kinkade, phil collins solo work, bon jovi, the patriotic comedy of Yakov Smirnoff, fans of American Idol and Survivor, people who talk loudly in restaurants, drunk drivers, homophobes, the subset of NASCAR fans who have appliances on their porch and/or cars on blocks in their front yard, and the ever compelling easy listening vibes of muzak, and other filth.

22. And Faux news, Dennis Miller, remakes of movies that didn't need
to be remade especially, people who invent computer viruses, in-laws who have never read a book in 40 years, Joe Lieberman, Joe Biden, country "hat acts," artery-clogging donut chains, people who somehow manage to show the tattoos on their butts and all the simplistic shows about history on the Hitler Channel!!

23. Absolutely!
And let's include the people who buy cheap liquor and mix it with sugary fruit juices/soda, anyone with their name on their belt buckle, and those who buy only polyester clothing "because it doesn't wrinkle" even though they never go anywhere where wrinkled clothing would make a goddamn difference.

Maybe Tolkein was just writing REALISTICALLY -- that people fuck up, big time, but even so, the task may be accomplished.

Thank you for temporarily getting me out of my LOTR rut. For years I have been wondering why Bill The Pony showed up for just one insignificant scene in FOTR. I guess Jackson was just giving a homage to the books, but it certainly wasn't one that meshed real well....

BTW -- Aragorn's horse takes a big shit as the group approaches Minas Tirith after the Ents have laid waste (no pun intended) to it in ROTK. I guess they were in a hurry getting the extended version out and everyone in the world missed this scatological detail but me.

20. Because
It would have been a short story instead of a FRICKIN' TRILOGY!

As any writer will tell you, there's no real money in short stories...besides, the marketing would suck...only two action figures, Gandalf and Frodo (with optional Eagle).

21. Wellllll
Because it's really about Gollum.

Gollum had his roll to play, and that was to destroy the ring he loved so much.

And if Frodo had gone with an Eagle the ring would never have been destroyed, he would have claimed it as his own, and being only a young hobbit, Sauron would have found him and taken the ring... bye-bye Middle Earth.

Also, it would have been shorter, and not NEARLY as fun. :P
