Why is the phrase "mouth breather" such an insult?

I am flummoxed - have a deviated septum and HAVE to breathe out of my mouth, or I would die of hypoxia...

17. Nobody said you had this, did they?
I have never seen you, but hardly picture you as the Kitchen Witch that my mother has hanging in her kitchen. You're attractive and, even if you nave a little nasal congestion, nobody will notice, LOL!:D

12. I'm not sure.
I understand "knuckle dragger" has something to do with someone who refuses to let evolution happen, but "mouth breather" could apply to people who have medical problems and can't help it. I would use "knuckle dragger" before I would use "mouth breather". Of course, there are easier ways to insult a person without even being obvious about it. ;)Haha.

13. When you breathe through your mouth
your brain doesn't receive as much oxygen as through your nose, and doesn't function as efficiently. At least that's what I've heard...(?)

15. Not entirely true
The air, when breathing through the mouth is not subject to as much purification via the mucous membranes and the cilia. The air is not as clean as if it had traveled through the nose/sinuses before hitting the lungs.

I just Googled - 'origin of mouth-breater' - with no quotes and got two results - the first was..."What Do We Call George Walker Bush?"

Same result for 'origin mouthbreater'
