2. Earthquakes, though I'm not far from lethal mudslides either
/shudder

One person died in an earthquake 1 hour north about a year ago. I don't remember how many died in the La Conchita mudslide.

Where I actually live, the biggest threat is the stupid air force base, oh an pesticides

But those big effing hailstorms can REALLY do some damage.

11. So far we've been lucky
We're expecting 'the big one' (earthquake) anytime now. The coast got hit by a Tsunami back in 1964.

We've been hit by vulcanic fall-out, but it was only a dusting.

There's a big river through town, but I don't remember it ever flooding.

I'm in Santa Cruz. So we get earthquakes, floods, mudslides, and forest fires.

Last week we also had funnel clouds in the bay (i.e., tornados) and once we had a tsunami.

But blizzards are a rarity.

40. Houston has the heat PLUS the humidity.
Tropical weather brings floods & the occasional hurricane. Tornadoes, too--but Tornado Alley farther north has the really big ones. (The Galveston Flood of 1900 killed more people than any natural disaster in US history.)

And we get unnatural disasters, too. In 1947, a couple of fertilizer-laden ships exloded in Texas City--the worst industrial accident in US history. And petrochemical plants blow up all the time.

17. Northwest NJ -- not really a disaster-prone area.
We get the occasional flood, yes. I'm generally well above and away from the flood-prone areas; doens't mean I don't sometimes get water in my basement, but nothing to cry over.

We sometimes hear about a tornado touching down somewhere in the state, but those are rare.

It's unusual to have a hurricane make it quite this far up, but it's happened.

What we're prone to mostly, is blizzards and nor'easters. They can be vicious, but rarely disastrous.

Hmmmmmm...

Oregon has volcanoes (albeit extinct and dormant ones) and earthquakes (last one was before we arrived here).

Washington has an active volcano -- Mt. St. Helens -- still smokin', I understand.

22. Around here it's hailstorms
This is the world's best (or worst) area for hail. They've caused hundreds of millions in damages when they come through the city and dent everyone's cars. The worst I've seen was twenty minutes of glof ball size, my beautiful garden was flattened and the yard smelled like a salad bar.

Maybe this isn't really a disaster, just a really big annoyance.

We get the occasional tornado here, mostly little ones, but sometimes big & ugly, like Edmonton in 1989 and the Pine Lake campground one in 2000.

37. You forgot tsunami
The last major one here struck Hilo and elsewhere in 1960. I have seen trees growing by the shore that were bent sideways, like walking sticks, then continued growing upward.

Mainlanders, no lulling yourselves into a sense of false security: Crescent City, Cal. got nailed after the Alaskan quake in '64.

38. Hasn't happened yet, but there is the potential
meltdown at the nearby nuclear power plant. Who put this in an area prone to earthquakes and sitting on an extinct volcano? It still produces hot sulfur springs though making it possibly not as inactive as we would like.
