do you think Castro will meet the President in Rome?
considering both will be there for the Pope's Funeral. Or do you think he'll "accidently" run into any of the US delegation?

4. yeah
I think our hopes have to rest with Clinton. I think he'd be the only one with the balls to meet Castro.

another question, do you think the Tawainese and Chinese delegations will meet?

6. true
wouldn't that be something, that the Chinese and Tawaines meet, but the US can't meet with the Cubans.

7. Castro might show up
but he is no hero. I really don't care what happens to Castro. I hope President Clinton does not grace him with any special favors either.

but i think it would be a wonderful act of diplomacy for the two delegations to meet, and Castro is coming, at least according to Cnn.com

11. maybe nothing right away
but i feel a large problem is the bush administrations outright refusal to meet with world leaders they don't like. If they were to meet, they'd obviously talk and that might start an official dialogue between the two countries. Ya never know, it may even lead, a few years down the road, to the lifting of the embargo. I just think we're presented with an incredible opportunity with all the world's leaders meeting in such a spiritual place, good things may happen.

13. Good point
Maybe Fidel will change his ways, give up his power, and dictatorship because the Holy Father died.

Sorry, but I don't share your optimism. I wish I could.

16. Dialogue?
And what would you ask for Castro to give up on?

Human rights issues, perhaps?

17. that'd be nice
but hell, if all it was said, was

"how are the kids/grandkids?"
"great, love 'em to death. How are yours?"
"Great."
etc....

I just want something. I just want them in a room, or in the church, talking, talking about whatever pops into their heads, comments about the funeral, anything. We can't get anything accomplished until the two sides actually start talking to each other.

18. Based on your answer, I think we are on the same page
Castro is NOT on our page though. Think about the fact that we can leave anytime we like, and Cubans cannot. Apples and oranges.

Dialogue is good, but with Castro you'll be holding your breath. He is a dictator in the true sense of the word.

19. right
i definitely understand who Castro is and how he is running his country. But also too, Castro is very old and won't be around for much longer, so this may be our best chance at getting in there and perhaps setting up the foundation for a post-Castro Cuba and ending Communism there. but like i said before, none of that is possible if we don't first get in a room with them.

10. I'm just glad I don't have to do the seating arrangement
"We can put France here next to the US." "No they don't get along." "Well how about the US next to Cuba?" "No." "Well how about the US next to Germany"....it would be a nightmare.

12. heh
i don't think they'd have to worry about fist fights breaking out in the middle of the funeral. it may even have profound (good) consequences to have rivals sitting next to eachother for such a spiritual and solemn occastion.

21. Castro should watch out for Bush Sr.
Bush (ex CIA chief) might bump into him and next thing you know Castro has a heart attack in a few days.

Not cold enough, you know. Kruschev tried to export us some snow but for some reason it didn't work out.
