Why do advertisers think that celebrities will help sell their product?
I just saw yet another ad with Patricia Heaton extolling the virtues of Jewel Food Stores. I guess, according to the ad agencies, that just because I saw one of the stars of "Everybody Loves Raymond" pushing a shopping cart in what's supposed to be a Jewel Food Store is going to get me to say to myself, "Gosh, Terry, the star of this long running sitcom says that Jewel Foods is endorsing this place, so it MUST be good!"

Isn't the idea that some celebrity pushing a product that he or she will probably never use (can you actually picture Patricia Heaton in a Jewel Food Store, for instance) a trifle insulting?

1. Because it works
it builds a positive brand image when your product is associated with someone people like.

Now personally, I can't stand Heaton, but celebrity endorsements have been used for a very long time, at great expense. They wouldn't do it if it weren't profitable to do so.
