1. "Gaol" in the UK in general...
still pronounced the same, though.

As I understand it, it was as spelling and pronunciation that arrived over the ocean with the colonists.

In Colonial Williamsburgh it was callled a gaol. It's probably an old English word, probably not Irish.

Just my 2 cents, and not more than I can remember at this time in the morning....

7. i love colonial williamsburg
been there twice and would love to go again this summer. i go to school in DC so it's only about a 3 hour drive.

8. Oscar Wilde was incarcerated in Reading Gaol...
presumably the use of the word gaol for "jail" hasn't changed since then.

9. For some gaol is a tad archaic
Also prison is used far more than gaol (or jail).

10. My Aussie husband spells it gaol
he also spells tire "tyre"

and he calls a wrench a "spanner"

They're completely different words after all.

Spanner and gaol here as well.
