3. No
Catholics make up the largest single denomination in the US, but they are 23% of the population, compared to 53% protestant.

5. Here's what the World Factbook sez.
Protestant 52%, Roman Catholic 24%, Mormon 2%, Jewish 1%, Muslim 1%, other 10%, none 10%.

Here's the Canadian stats- Roman Catholic 46%, Protestant 36%, other 18%.

6. If that is true, it is only because of recent Hispanic immigration
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 06:04 PM by imenja
Catholics have traditionally been a minority in the US. The Klan used to burn crosses on the property of Catholics. My grandmother had one burned on her farm.

So if Catholics are now a majority, that relates to growth in the Hispanic population. It probably also explains why the Protestant Right has dropped their rhetoric about Catholics not being Christians and the Pope as the anti-Christ.

7. That depends. . .
Protestant is a very generic term for the faiths that split from the catholic church protesting the actions or beliefs held by the church.

Given that there are hundreds of different Baptist faiths, methodists, lutherans, episcopalians, 7th day adventists, mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, etc etc etc.

The term "protestant" covering all of these is too generic. Sure the "protestants" outnumber the catholics, but so far as being members of ONE congregation, the catholics have it. They outnumber all others.

8. Catholics are the largest single denomination in the US

but the various protestant denominations added together outnumber the Catholics. I think it's something like 50% Protestant and 25% Catholic.
