Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honnely,
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honnely,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honnely.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on puff’s gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene’er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when Puff roared out his name. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honnely,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honnely.

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave,
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honnely,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honnely.

2. The song had nothing at all to do with drugs, contrary to popular

3. Unfortunately a writer's control over the meaning of his work
stops when it enters the public domain. You're saying 30 million potheads got it wrong. That's entirely possible. The writers also probably didn't mean for name of their song to be attached to a low flying gunship capable of laying 5000 rounds a minute on unsuspecting villagers, but there you are.

4. The song was not about drugs. If you don't like that fact, take it up
with Peter Yarrow, not me.

30 million potheads, when stoned, will think the Ballad of the Green Berets is about pot. That doesn't make it so.

9. All I'm saying
is that perception sometimes becomes reality, and a work of art can be about whatever the audience thinks it's about.

13. As you would know if you read the Snopes link, the rumors about
it being a "drug" song didn't even start until after the song had fallen off the Billboard charts.

To try to argue that it means something other than what it's creator intended is to insult its creator.

5. That song always
made me cry, always. Probably still would if I let myself think about it.

6. Songs about growing up and innocence lost have that effect on people
It's still a cool song.

8. It is a great song.
I can't imagine being so jaded that it would not affect you. Sad comment but most likely true. I like to be moved like that, much music does move me like that even without the words so perhaps it is just my strangeness.

11. At least you're smart enough to realize that it's not a song about
getting high.

16. I had heard that
and it could be but then it also might not be. As you said upthread, potheads would think the Green Beret was about getting high (or somthing like that). HeeHee, true that. When you are high everything is about getting high or getting munchies, no?

10. It's amazing how much a lie told by Newsweek decades ago can
stick with people. The song had nothing to do with drugs

14. Mmmmhmmmm, I'll take the word of the folks that wrote the song

I think they know better than your 30 million potheads. That's like saying 50 million people voted for Bush, 50 million voters can't be wrong.

15. Hey
I admitted it was possible. As for the DEA, I would welcome a full and fair investigation. We don't get much company out here at theend of the road. Besides, I can always slip out into the woods for a day or two 'til the heat dies down.
