1. It's more like this..
wer gon ta tak a trip ta Yerp.

My son is dyslexic and I've helped him write for years. A sample of something he wrote about going to Europe. He just can't put what he hears into words a non dyslexic person can understand. He knows exactly what he is writing though.

2. I understood that perfectly, even before I read the explanation.

I'm not dyslexic, but I have been doing a lot of research into speech pathology/synthesis and phonetics lately, and have been getting results in a similar vein. I suppose it only takes practice and immersion. Of course, there are different kinds of dyslexia. Have you had a formal diagnosis beyond generic "dyslexia?"

On edit: Where do you live? I'd hazard a guess at the Upper Midwest (OH, IL or MI), assuming that your son's writing is in fact a close phonemic representation of how he speaks.

and yes he has had a formal diagnosis but no, I don't think the diagnosis was beyond general. He has very strong verbal skills and can articulate his thoughts very well. After 4 years of private schools and private tutors and getting nowhere, I finally got him is one of the best/richest school districts in the state where he has made good progress.

He is in 6th grade now and has come a long way learning how to decode words and read, he is finally up to his grade level. But I think he will always need assistance with his writing.

4. With time and patience it can be overcome
My dyslexia (why on earth did they make the damn word so odd to spell?) is not very severe and (without being baostful) I am not exactly stupid and so have always managed to achieve well. I received specific assistance in later years at school, and had extra time in my university exams.

I was always very good at maths, but until quite recently my spelling was absolutely atrocious (words still don't always look right when they are, or look wrong when they are). My verbal skills were also very good (and still are); it's odd how it affects some things but not others.

5. you're right, dyslexic people are not stupid
my son is extremely intelligent. He has such wonderful ideas and can explain very intricate methods and theories step by step. He's the kind of person that can tell someone what needs to be done, he just cant write it down. Words are his bane, it's what torment him. The thing I've always been amazed at is he can watch a movie and remember the lines for every character in a scene and repeat it verbatim but he could never remember his list of spelling words.
