Damnit, explain the reason for your DU Sig line please
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 06:58 AM by LynneSin
Because I really wanna know!!

My sig line:

My favorite Bloom County cartoon - because that old man pretty much represents every Neo-con puke I've ever met.

I have a favorite quote from Abbie Hoffman, who is a hero of mine (hell, I named a cat after him)

That Unfit for command was some googlebomb that someone was trying to setup about 6 months ago - not sure if it ever worked

And finally our world could use more cowbell - and especially our posts here at DU

1. It is an illustration of the vapidity of our governments
The blank white space shows the basis for policy in king george and poodle boy's administrations.

O.K. I admit, I just haven't been arsed to think of something suitably witty to stick in there yet.

4. The first part is self-explanatory.
The second part is my user name replicated on a 1968 Texas license plate, which was the year of my birth. It was also the year of a world's fair in San Antonio called Hemisfair. I only included 6 letters of my user name because that's all that is allowed on Texas plates. :-)

10. i think it is neat and clever
E Pluribus Unum - Our America

As a national motto E Pluribus Unum rocks. At all levels of it's meaning, whether it is a citizens relationship to their government; or America's relationship to the rest of the world, it says that there is no aristocracy, no right to rule. Just that we are one out of many. We can be replaced, we may be superseeded but we all have the right to count and be counted.

I think it is the Democrats motto. In God We Trust is an abberation. Just like the Republican party who wave it like a bloody flag.

To my journey in faith. How I had faith, I questioned it. I analyzed "God," and ultimately rejected it. An omnipotent, omnibenevolent, yet easily offended by the slightest of transgressions on ANYONE's part ?

IF there is something "godlike" out there, it doesn't care as much as we'd like to believe it does. Religion is nothing but egomania. Faith = Hubris.

57. I've changed mine a few times
but right now I chose to be profound in my sig by quoting a great American teacher whose simple quote can change the world if enough people followed his advice.

The last time I changed it, it was a quote from Howard Beale, he of Network fame, about TV being an illusion, and people were the reality. Even thirty some odd years later, the movie Network is very relevant, perhaps even more so, with all the reality shows on nowadays. Here are some choice quotes from Network (eerily on the mark!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Howard Beale: You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here, you're beginning to believe that the tube is reality and your own lives are unreal. You do. Why, whatever the tube tells you: you dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even think like the tube. This is mass madness, you maniacs. In God's name, you people are the real thing, WE are the illusion.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Howard Beale: Right now, there is a whole, an entire generation that never knew anything that didn't come out of this tube. This tube is the gospel, the ultimate revelation; this tube can make or break presidents, popes, prime ministers; this tube is the most awesome goddamn propaganda force in the whole godless world, and woe is us if it ever falls into the hands of the wrong people, and that's why woe is us that Edward George Ruddy died. Because this company is now in the hands of CCA, the Communications Corporation of America; there's a new chairman of the board, a man called Frank Hackett, sitting in Mr. Ruddy's office on the twentieth floor. And when the 12th largest company in the world controls the most awesome goddamn propaganda force in the whole godless world, who knows what shit will be peddled for truth on this network?

If you've never seen Network, I suggest you rent it and get chills down your spine.

58. Song by NoFX, "The Idiots are Taking Over"
Here are the lyrics.

it's not the right time to be sober.
now the idiots have taken over,
spreading like a social cancer. is there an answer?

Mensa membership exceeding.
tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding.
Watson, it's really elementary,
the industrial revolution
has flipped the bitch on evolution.
the benevolent and wise are being thwarted, ostracized. what a bummer.
the world keeps getting dumber.
insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason.

darwin's rollin over in his coffin.
the fittest are surviving much less often.
now everything seems to be reversing, and it's worsening.
someone plopped a steamer in the gene pool.
now angry mob mentality's no longer the exception, it's the rule.
and I'm startin to feel a lot like Charlton Heston
stranded on a primate planet,
apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
with generals and the armies that obeyed them.
followers following fables,
philosophies that enable them to rule without regard.

there's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated.
political scientists get the same one vote as some Arkansas inbred.
majority rule don't work in mental institutions.
sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions.

what are we left with?
a nation of god-fearing pregnant nationalists
who feel it's their duty to populate the homeland,
pass on traditions,
how to get ahead religions,
And prosperity via simpleton culture.

the idiots are takin over.

KJ

60. Being a romantic at heart,
I liked this line from the poem Out There Somewhere by Henry Herbert Knibbs. So sue me.

OUT THERE SOMEWHERE
by Henry Herbert Knibbs

As I was hiking past the woods, the cool and sleepy summer woods,
I saw a guy a-talking to the sunshine in the air;
Thinks I, he’s going to have a fit -- I’ll stick around and watch a bit;
But he paid no attention, hardly knowing I was there.

He must have been a college guy, for he was talking big and high, --
The trees were standing all around as silent as a church --
A little closer I saw he was manufacturing poetry,
Just like a Mocker sitting on a pussy-willow perch.

I squatted down and rolled a smoke and listened to each word he spoke;
He never stumbled, reared or broke; he never missed a word,
And though he was a Bo like me, he’d been a gent once, I could see;
I ain’t much strong on poetry, but this is what I heard:

“We’ll dance a merry saraband from here to drowsy Samarcand.
Along the sea, across the land, the birds are flying South,

And you, my sweet Penelope, out there somewhere you wait for me,

With buds of roses in your hair and kisses on your mouth.

“The mountains are all hid in mist; the valley is like amethyst;
The poplar leaves they turn and twist; oh, silver, silver green!
Out there somewhere along the sea a ship is waiting patiently,
While up the beach the bubbles slip with white afloat between.

“The tide-hounds race far up the shore -- the hunt is on! The breakers roar,
(Her spars are tipped with gold and o’er her deck the spray is flung);
The buoys that rollic in the bay, they nod the way, they nod the way!
The hunt is up! I am the prey! The hunter’s bow is strung!”

“Out there somewhere, --” says I to me. “By Gosh! I guess that’s poetry!
Out there somewhere - Penelope - with kisses on her mouth!”
And then, thinks I, “O college guy, your talk it gets me in the eye,
The North is creeping in the air; the birds are flying South.”

And yet, the sun was shining down, a-blazing on the little town,
A mile or so ‘way down the track a-dancing in the sun.
But somehow, as I waited there, there came a shiver in the air;
“The birds are flying South,” he says. “The winter has begun.”

Says I, “Then let’s be on the float; you certainly have got my goat;
You make me hungry in my throat for seeing things that’s new.
Out ere somewhere we’ll ride the range a-looking for the new and strange;
My feet are tired and need a change. Come on! It’s up to you!

“There ain’t no sweet Penelope somewhere that’s longing much for me,
But I can smell the blundering sea and hear the rigging hum;
And I can hear the whispering lips that fly before the outbound ships;
And I can hear the breakers on the sand a-booming ‘Come!’”

And then that slim, poetic guy, turned and looked me in the eye:
“...It’s overland and overland and overseas to -- where?”
“Most anywhere that isn’t here. " I says. His face went kind of queer:
The place we're in is always here. The other place is there."

He smiled, though, as my eye caught his. “Then what a lot of there there is
To go and see and go and see and go and see some more.”
He did a fancy step or two. Says he, “I think I’ll go with you --”
... Two moons, and we were baking in the straits at Singapore.

Around the world and back again; we saw it all. The mist and rain
In England and the dry old plain from Needles to Berdoo.
We kept a-rambling all the time. I rustled grub, he rustled rhyme --
Blind baggage, hoof it, ride or climb -- we always put it through.

Just for a con I’d like to know (yes, he crossed over long ago;
And he was right, believe me, Bo!) if somewhere in the South,
Down where the clouds lie on the sea, he found his sweet Penelope,
With buds of roses in her hair and kisses on her mouth

65. OK, LynneSin,
You REALLY want to know? OK, here it is: My sig line is a quote that I read many years ago when I was a young lass; it impressed me then, and I've always tried to live by it. Certainly I have NOT always succeeded, and sometimes I failed because I wanted to fail...But my nobler,gentler side loves the sentiments expressed here. As I've grown older and seen how people's attitudes can really affect the folks around them, I've tried more often to live by this. And by using it for my sig line, other people will read it, and maybe they will be affected for the good by it...

There's a picture first from churchsigngenerator.com, using a famous Reverend Lovejoy quote for inspiration. Then there's the Dark Magician (anime fan--and I freely admit that I play the Duel Monsters card game), and my proclamation of "Liberal, atheist, and proud."

Finally, there's my George Bernard Shaw quote--I saw it in my Logic text and thought it was funny.
