If the next Pope picks the name Peter......were in deep trouble.
My buddy was telling me this last night, his brother is a priest. Apparently it has something to do with the Fatamia prophecies, which foretold the death of JP1 and the striking down of JP2 be gunshots.

Supposedly the prophecies predict the last Pope before the "rapture" will be Peter. I wonder if the fundies are praying for something like this.

I don't know the entire story. I did give his brother a book on some of the anti-popes yrs ago. He agreed there were some strange, violent Popes way back.

2. "The Rapture" is against Catholic dogma.
Your buddy's brother is apparently not a very good priest.

22. I think "The Rapture" was actually created by the dude who
started the 7th day adventists if I remember right. It has no basis in the Bible or anywhere else.

23. I agree the term isn't used, he the priest doesn't use it
only refers to the concept others claim.

With respect to the rapture, Catholics certainly believe that the event of our gathering together to be with Christ will take place, though they do not generally use the word "rapture" to refer to this event (somewhat ironically, since the term "rapture" is derived from the text of the Latin Vulgate of 1 Thess. 4:17—"we will be caught up," ).

5. People have mentioned on DU that 'Peter' won't be --
-- chosen as a name, too, but I was thinking, well, hell, why not?

Let's get that Rapture thing up and running already!

If you can guarantee that Fred Phelps and Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell and Jim Dobson are going to have their sorry asses raptured out of here in one fell swoop, then let's bring it on.

I'm for a Pope Peter sooner rather than later.

7. The first Pope was Peter.
And there hasn't been another Pope Peter since.

I'd bet the farm that the next pope will not take the name Peter.

That would be, for all intents and purposes, like picking the name Pope Jesus or Pope God. Terribly, terribly presumptuous.

8. Loads of mystic Catholics think that the last Pope will be called Peter
Just like the first one was (there haven't been any other Peters in there).

It sounds rather like the prophesies of St. Malachy, I can't remember all of the details off hand.

It won't be a Rapture though, that's a nasty 19th century invention which Catholics don't like.

29. I beg to differ
It is rare for a pope to take the same name as his predecessor, to differentiate himself. The only reason the last one took John Paul was because the previous John Paul had such a short term.

16. fatama
what a joke.

The Vatican released the secret in 2000 with an accompanying statement explaining that it had already happened. According to the Church, the prophecy referred to the assassination attempt on John Paul II.

There was a problem with this interpretation, mainly that it didn't seem to have the slightest thing to do with the assassination attempt. The actual event was one man with a gun shooting at the pope and failing to kill him. Where was the "group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him"? Where was the "big city half in ruins"? Where were the corpses of the bishops, priests, nuns, monks and sundry? And of course, John Paul II actually survived the attempt, unlike the guy in the Secret.
