WTF is wrong with my Cat?
Since when did crapping on my sofa become acceptable behavior? Four years of impeccable, litter box-trained conduct out the window. Today is the third day in a row I've come home to my little brown treats. My only saving grace, he hasn't yet peed on my sofa (knock knock knock).

Is there a vet/pet shrink in the house?

1. Is his box clean?
Any recent changes to the household -- new spouse, baby, other pet?

If none of the above .... take him to the vet. They do that to show there's something wrong....

3. Something's wrong, that's for sure.
Start with the easiest things...is the catbox clean enough for him? Have you had any domestic upheavals (fights, new baby, new cat, dog, in-laws come for a lengthy stay)? Has he been barred from someplace in the house that he used to be allowed free roam?

Then...has he been to a vet lately? You might want to check and make sure that he isn't telling you that he's sick.

To change the behavior, first clean the spot with an enzyme cleaner. Then, for when you won't be around, take several mousetraps and set them upside down under a layer of paper. They'll snap when the cat jumps on the couch. Won't catch him but will scare him off. Or, if you don't like that idea, put aluminum foil down on the couch. Cats really don't like walking on it. Especially when it crunches.

4. Thx! Good advice
This is really freaking me out. He hasn't been to a vet in awhile, but I don't know WTF a vet is going to do for this problem...

5. Sometimes cats will do this
when they've got an infection or are coming down with something. You should have seen what I dealt with before I realized my cat was telling me he was diabetic. He looked normal but it was like the litter box was off limits, he was peeing in the dog food bowls, pooping in my husband's shoes. All kinds of stuff. Took him to the vet, got him on insulin and he went back to being the good cat he'd always been.

Not to say that your cat might be diabetic but he could just be telling you that he's not feeling good, he needs a doctor.

9. Yes, get him to a vet. Usually, our cats try to let us know when...
...something is wrong, and that sounds like what he's trying to do.

10. Cause I was thinking of giving him up
for adoption. This is really pissing me off. Maybe I'll try the nice-guy approach first :-)

16. damn, thats a strange one
my diabetic cat died this past december. but when we first found out she was diabetic a year prior, she had lost weight, was drinking *alot* and peeing alot as well. my mom had a diabetic cat, so it was the first thing I thought of. I ended up regulating her myself with a home glucose test kit, and all natural food. stopped giving the shots. When I had her put down, she had been having these non stop seizures late night into the morning and the vet couldn't figure it out, and I couldn't put her through anymore shit, so I let her go. It was very hard. And so isn't dealing with a diabetic cat, I was always worried about her. kudos to you, many people would just have their cat put down when they find out they are diabetic.

17. Thank you. But diabetes is actually a better
diagnosis than I was prepared for. I really thought it was going to be something really bad.

Oh, and now I have -2- diabetics. They are brothers, with 2 more in the litter and me holding my breath that I'm not going to end up with 4.

They're all 15 years old now with the one being diabetic almost 5 years and the other 3.

11. Where can you purchase it?
We only have Lowes and Walmart here. Is it available at PetSmart?

13. If not that brand, a half dozen others,
...but I think you can get it there.

Is the litter box nice and clean? You didn't move it, did you...or accidentally lock the cat out of the litter box area?

One other thing--have you been neglecting the poor dear of late? Out late, or GONE for awhile? It could be "punishing" you for not being around as often...

18. Another possibility
is have you recently changed cat litters? Oftentimes, there is a difference in litters that you might not see, but a cat's nose is better than human's when it comes to a difference. If that's it, change litters back to the old litter and see what happens.

Different litter, litter box, kid in house, dog in house, new noisy neighbors, etc. They are cute, furry, funny little things... with minds we will never, ever understand...
