Major Props to David Blaine

I know it was a trick.

But it worked in a spectacular fashion. Nice to see that the British people warmed up to him.

My prediction for his next trick:
He will actually be swallowed by a blue whale.

2. Not to rain on your parade, but....

People like Gandhi did this to raise awareness for a cause. David Blaine's only cause was David Blaine. We need more Gandhi's and fewer David Blaines.

6. I know, I'm just saying...

Where the people who are willing to do this for something other than themselves?

Really though, would it have been so hard for Blaine to say: "I'm doing this for breast cancer awareness?" or "I'm doing this to protest the unjust war in Iraq" or "I'm doing this because there are millions dying of extreme poverty?". What a wasted opportunity.

7. Point taken.

But we shouldn't condemn the chap because he's doing his job. I don't know about you, but dealing with evidence from day to day that the world is going to hell in a handbasket is ennervating. Sometimes entertainment is enough in itself; we all need a break occasionally.

I remember seeing him on Conan a few years ago and he did some stuff that was downright spooky.

4. The guy's a magic genius.

On one of his shows Blaine did the old "is this your card" trick with two cops on the street. Seemed straightforward until he told one of the cops to look inside his own shoe, and lo and behold...! Think about it, he got the chosen card INSIDE THE COPS' SHOE WHILE HE WAS WEARING THEM!!! James Randi, eat your heart out...
