Looking for some jazz music suggestions...
I posted this last week but wasn't specific enough and ended up with some music I really didn't care for.

I'm looking for some old New Orleans style jazz that ISN'T Dixieland. I'm not real into that kind of stuff. I heard this song called "New Orleans Bump" from the soundtrack to "Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson" and it was by Wynton Marsalis. Obviously this isn't an old recording, but I love the style Does anyone have any suggestions for more music like this? You can hear a little sample here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00069YEIY/qid=1113680841/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-6390836-7142556

Thanks in advance for the wonderful suggestions I know are coming. You guys are so great about this kind of thing. ;)

1. Have you poked around at AllMusic.com?
http://www.allmusic.com

Find an artist in the genre you want and look for similar artists or the artists that were influences.

There also is a strain of cajun that crosses pretty hard into jazz.

5. Damn, I should have just looked for more Marsalis
I've been aware of him for YEARS, but never really listened. I'm really diggin' what he does.

Also a big fan of Dave Brubeck. Not the same style, but definitely innovative.

15. Hard to go wrong with Duke.

A lot of his music has that New Orleans flavor because of Russell Procope, the clarinet player. You might want to try "Rockin' in Rhythm" next.

14. Try John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 03:13 PM by hue
It truly is one of the best jazz albums ever produced. No one has heard of it but evryone who's heard it falls in love and awe! It's the only time John Coltrane ever played with a singer. Johnny Hartman was eclipsed by white singers of his day--and what a shame as his voice cannot be matched!
The album includes 6 beautiful works; They Say Its Wonderful, Dedicated to You, My One and Only Love, Lush Life (no better rendition than this one ever), You Are Too Beautiful, and a remarkable gem, Autumn Serenade.

Pretty sure you can order it from Amazon by Impulse!

17. I would send a message to progmom - she
not only hosts a radio show, but has a job allowing her access to all sorts of information regarding jazz music. She is the 7th most important person in jazz. Seriously. :)

21. Hard to go wrong here.
O.P. is one of the great piano players of all time. His trio was the "house band" for the JATP (Jazz at the Philharmonic) tours that brought jazz to audiences all over the world.

So Oscar is the piano player on hundreds of great jazz recordings, not to mention his own trio's sides, particularly on Verve Records.
