An "applying for a job" question....
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 10:26 PM by Sannum
Is it better to fax or e-mail a resume to a company looking for a receptionist, or is it better to walk in and hand in the resume?

I really, really, want this job!

1. hand it in!
If you have a nice look, and don't even pretend you don't know what I'm talking about, I would hand in the application. It may be against the law, and it may not "supposed to happen," but many offices like an attractive receptionist up front, and if you fit the image, I would definitely exploit that. It just can't hurt.

even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

7. I know exactly what you are talking about...
Despite my own feelings about the way I look, I have been told by total strangers about what they thought were my above-average looks. I guess I could put on my best little "Jackie O" suit, heels, and bookishly sexy glasses and hand it in personally. :P.

I found this position in the newspaper, though it is also online. I think I will walk over there tomorrow and hand my resume in. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

Oh god...the sexy glasses comment is going to make me hand in my feminist card, isn't it:).

2. I don't know if you can really tell.
I suppose walking it in can't hurt. If you're lucky, you'll get an interview right there if you hand it in.

3. how did you find out about the job?
generally if the job is posted on the web--then I respond electronically (because they are obviously set up to receive stuff that way--and probably prefer it for convenience).

But--if a job is posted in a newspaper or bulletin board or something like that--then I prefer the personal touch of taking it in personally.

5. If you hand it in make sure you present the...
face and attitude that they want their clients to see. You may be the first and only point of contact with potential clients.

6. If you can, hand it in.
And ask to speak to the person you would be reporting to, if they're available. If not, leave a personal note on the resume, thanking them for the chance to demonstrate your skills. If you actually can say hello, have a list of reference letters with you to hand to the boss, talk about your good work experiences and how you are sure you'd be an asset to the team at Company X. Then shake hands and leave.

I've hired many people, and this type of demonstration tells me you mean business.
