I Just Realized That Between The Pope and the OKC Bombing Anniversary...
...the fact that today was also the anniversary of the end og the siege at David Koresh's compund outside Waco went completely unnoticed on DU today.

The only reason I remembered it at all was that they just showed some footage of the fire that ended the siege on the late news.

(BTW, tomorrow is the anniversary of the Columbine shootigs. Also Hitler's birthday.)

4. What a fucked up world we live in!
I long for the days when Christmas and Chanukah were the biggies on the calendar, instead of breast beating reminders of death and destruction. Hell, when I was a kid, the only days I cared about involved school vacations, summer holidays, and gifts. Nowadays, we have become way too adept at marking tragedy, and we feed on it. The difference between Americans and fundamentalist shi'ites is a cat o nine tails chain with tacks in the links (the better to beat yourself bloody). The bemoaning, though, is exactly the same.

I'm sick of all this WOE, WOE worship. Nothing to be done about it, but I long for happier times.

2. Yeah, all that isn't a coincidence.
The right-wing fundies like to terrorize us on their hero Adolf Hitler's birthday.

3. This is a crazy time of year it seems
Funny how all those notorious anniversaries cluster together. (Though IIRC the OKC bombing being on the same day as the Branch Davidian siege was planned and not a coincidence.)

6. It's not a coincidence that things happen all around the same time.
Columbine, OKC bombing, Waco/Branch Davidian, and Hitler's birthday.

This is all right-wing fundies way of 'honoring' their hero, Adolf Hitler.

9. You don't make claims like that without backing it up.
You just don't.

A google search would suffice.

" NEW YORK, April 7 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Extremist groups in the United States are planning events and heightened activity through the month of April, especially during the period of April 15 through April 24, at a time when they traditionally commemorate the birthday of Adolf Hitler. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which monitors the activities of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups, has noted the plans for stepped-up activity by national groups such as the neo-Nazi National Alliance and local chapters of the Ku Klux Klan. Hitler's birthday falls on April 20, which also coincides with the Columbine shootings and other recent American tragedies. This year, April 19 marks the 10th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.

"While we are always concerned when racist groups threaten to step up their activities, the month of April is of special concern because it not only marks Hitler's birthday, but marks the anniversaries of a number of recent American tragedies, including the Branch Davidian standoff, the Columbine school shootings and the Oklahoma City bombing," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "The anti-government extremists and white supremacists in the past have used Hitler's birthday to make threats, and to sometimes act out violently."

5. And my roommate's birthday --
you have NO idea how thrilled she is by this particular confluence of events -- and they just keep piling up.
Sigh.

8. Yeah, it's my cousin's wedding anniversary, too
That's worse 'cause she actually chose to have Hitler's birthday and the Columbine anniversary as the day to get married. (Though I'm pretty certain she didn't take the events into consideration; I think it had more to do with days the church was available to be married in.)

Oh yeah, it's also "4-20"- National Pot-Smoking Day. I don't celebrate it myself, but if it helps lighten the tone of the day... :smoke:

12. I remembered Waco.
It was McVeigh's reason for choosing this date.

13. Yes. It is not a coincidence. McVeigh chose April 19.
To coincide with the anniversary of the Koresh deal.

14. I think around this time too
Lincoln was assassinated, the Titanic sank, FDR died and the Civil War began (and ended too!!). Cruelest month indeed.
